When you’re eating in the backcountry, you have to expect the unexpected. A broken utensil here, a stray animal there: There are tons of things that can go wrong Read More
You can get snowpeak titanium sporks on Amazon for~$7 each. They have a bowl that is wide and deep enough to actually be useful. You forgo the plastic knife but who is carrying a spork around and not a pocket knife?
smallbitOne of my objections to this spork is all the nooks & crannies, grooves, holes, openings, etc. - all of which bear on cleaning. A smooth-surfaced spork, by contract, can simply be wiped, followed by a quick spritz of hand sanitizer, if you carry that in your pack. (I do, for fire starting.) A METAL spork can actually be sterilized in fire.
Are all the mockers too high on their horses to contemplate that maybe Ka-bar just have a sense of humour and use the term 'tactical' with tongue in cheek?
Whatever the name, it is a unique and useful variation on the traditional spork design. In knife /fork mode they are well proportioned and great for eating meat etc off a plate. The knife easily and efficiently deals with a good steak at the camp BBQ: a standard spork... not so much. In extended spork mode, with the knife neatly stashed away, it is perfect for getting down to the bottom of those freeze dried meal packets. My only criticism is the strange shape of the spork, a rounder, shallower spoon-like shape would work better.
So, having actually bought one and used it, I really like it for what it is - a plastic eating utensil which I take on my travels.
High price??? It’s $20 for three. How hard can they hit me?
I bought a set to put in my cars to replace the last spork I lost for a “throw down” eating utensil because I eat a lot in the car. Comes in real handy for the Coney Island hot dogs I carve up at my local Sonic drive-in, and this one has a knife, which will come in handy.
We need tactical chopsticks. They should be made of unobtanium, have super-high compressed air canisters built in for underwater breathing, be capable of radioing in Morse code by tapping, and be solar rechargeable. Why rechargeable, you say? ... JUST IN CASE ...
The KA-BAR Tactical Spork is silly, goofy, unnecessary, self-indulgent, and the kind of thing that should never have existed. Only a crazy man would come up with something like this, and only a fool would buy one.
That said, I already own two (what can I say, I'm a fool with a fondness for sporks).
I keep one in my daily carry bag, and one in the drawer at home next to my assortment of other plastic, steel, wood, and titanium sporks. It's not something I would grab frequently at home, but it does come in handy. The spork part is a little smaller than ideal, which makes it easier to pocket, but less useful to eat with. The knife is surprisingly usable, although it's smallish, too.
Overall, it's definitely more gimmick than truly functional, but let's face it, you knew that before you decided to hit "buy", didn't you? This is about more than useful or practical; this is about awesome. And a made-in-the-US Tactical Spork with "KA-BAR" stamped on it has awesome in spades.
Massdrop, please break 'Tactical' off from 'Everyday Carry' into its own group.
Self-defense fans should have a place to fantasize about penetrating their enemies with their 2.5 inches without fear of being mocked.
