Note that all modern Damascus is really pattern welded, not true Damascus. Not a big deal as modern steels are at least as good as the mythical steel. True Damascus is formed of a single type of steel and the patterns are formed by carbide precipitates during forging/heat treating. Layering steel can give similar performance and beauty, but it's kind of "cheating" IMO. True Damascus is lost to history.
