Help out a vaping noob, what else do I need to start vaping besides this protank? Is there some other device that this plugs into or is this a discrete unit? The description makes me think I need to buy a battery pack or something and Kanger's website isn't any more helpful.

TaniosYes, you'll need to buy a battery, charger for said battery, and either a mechanical or digital MOD that holds the battery :)

TaniosIf you can find a Vision Spinner 2, that is a great battery to start with. It has adjustable voltage and is quite sturdy.

Out of the box, mine hasnt been working on the iTaste VV 3.0 I received. When I try to activate the unit, the green light will stay on for a few seconds instead of fading out. No vapor. Tried disassembling everything. No dice. Switched back to the iClear 16s they give you. Works fine. Googling the problem, no help thus far.
Edit: Word on the street is that the solid green light is the iTaste's protection function for defective coils. Will try the other coil, see if that works. Edit2: Can confirm, only sent one operational coil.

Our warehouse staff are working on breaking down the bulk shipment and repackage them into individual orders before shipping them out to everyone. Hey everyone, We have just been informed that our order of the Protank III has been shipped out by Kangertech. We have already alerted our warehouse staff about this shipment, so we should be able to process the bulk shipment upon arrival, and repackage them into individual orders before shipping them out to everyone very quickly. We are expecting to have these out to everyone within 24 hours after the shipment arrives. Cheers!

We were told by Kanger that the reason Protank 3 is being phased out is because they want to prioritize their production resources on Aerotank, which is a more expensive product.
They've been improving the design of Protank 3 throughout its product life cycle, and for our order, there shouldn't be any problems that might be associated with early Protank 3 design.
