Sennheiser PC37X randomly goes bad after disconnecting the cable ?

I plan on using these speakers as an upgrade to the ones that are in my TV, I'm using them there because I was trying to avoid having a separate AV amp just for my television setup. Would it be possible to turn off the internal amplifier in these speakers and drive them with my Vintage HI-FI receiver which will be sitting just on the other end of my basement? I have a set of speakers for the HI-FI obviously but I can foresee a few scenarios where i would like the ability to pipe the music off to this set of speakers as well as my regular ones.
I cant possibly see where this might go wrong!
