A quick update for you all! We've been in touch with the vendor and they've let us know that they are nearly finished packaging the individual orders and everything is still set to ship out by early next week. We will continue to check in with them and update the group as soon as everything has gone out!
Thanks for your patience and expect an update from us by the end of the day Pacific Time on 7/22 or sooner if something comes up.
It's a go! The order for the Katadyn Pocket Water Filter was placed just after the drop came to an end. Now our vendor will be working hard to prepare it for shipment to each of you.
As soon as we receive word from the vendor about the shipping schedule, we will update you all with that information.
Look forward to another update from us by the end of the day Pacific Time on 7/17 or earlier if anything comes up.
I know this drop just ended but is it too late to claim one of the unsold filters? The drop was limited to 8 units but I don't believe they all sold.
$13 more on amazon with free shipping. Not seeing a great deal here.
so the lowest pricing wont be advertised to us until everyone required to make the purchase takes place first?
Something cheaper, like the Vario, would have been more in my price range...
I have been looking at these since the 80's when the original was all aluminum and looked a bit tougher than they do now. The black color just makes it seem like it is made of plastic instead of aluminum IMHO. Even way back then they sold for $150. Wish I had purchased one of those back then, I would probably still own it. I saw the lower price and could not pass it up. The field cleanable filter and solid construction are great features. Who wants to carry extra filters or have their clean water producer broken out in the field?

If I am correct, the original version (with the white body) also had a plastic torso. That is, the white tube in the middle is also plastic, not aluminum.
Was there an all aluminum version? If so, I'm not aware of it. Thus, I believe this newer version is no leass durable than the original one.
Anyhow, I have three of the old white bodied version filters, which I believe is the original model. I always marvel at how precise and solid the pumping action is. Truly a quality product.
Because of how much heavier and bombproof this filter is, it is a great choice for a home survival kit, or situations where failure of your water filter is not an option.
If you're doing a 2 or 3 day hike, then a lighter but less durable model, like a Katadyn Hiker (PUR) or one of the MSR models, like the Sweetwater, would do you fine.

As a less expensive option I would recommend Katadyn Combi (if you don't mind plastic body). It has the same filter longevity as Pocket plus it has a built-in carbon filter and optionally can be used with faucet mount adaptor.
You also have an option to directly attach Nalgene bottle to bottom flange of the Combi. It's a bit larger than Pocket, but not by much. May be Massdrop can do that one, too.
I have back packed all over the Sierras and other areas as well. This is an amazing product. Get rid of the iodine tablets and buy this filter. You will not be sorry. Also buy a colapable bucket...that will help too. Cheers..
Could you mention where you saw this for $100 I have never seen it that low but would love to find it
Heavyjim
BS, it never sells for $100. The cost of replacement filter for this model alone is way upwards of $100. I bought mine ten years ago and even then it was around $200.
This offer is twice as expensive as other catalogs that list this for just around $100. Check out other source for this item. It is a great product just to costly in this drop.
You'd really want to be filtering a lot of turbid water for this to be worth carrying IMO.

Have you tried a Sawyer Mini? Lighter and faster (and much cheaper). Sure you have to back wash it occasionally and the bags fail now and then but the filter + 3 bags + backflush syringe weighs about 100g.

No, I haven't. It looks like a solid system and I would definitely give it a try. Can't believe how light it is!!
What would the benefits of this be over a SteriPEN? I understand the SteriPEN is in a whole different class of water treatment, but the goal is the same/similar.
I imagine that the Katadyn will result in much better tasting water in addition to filtering out chemicals and other matter in the water, but are these the only advantages? I may have just answered my own question, but confirmation always makes me feel better. Thanks!

Appreciate the reply, semka! Will do more deliberating on this one.

Sterilising and filtering are 2 different processes ,,,,, If possible DO BOTH.
Sawyer mini + water boiled for several minutes is a cheaper alternative maybe.
i bought mine last year on amazon, what i can say is that it is the best water filter that you can ever have.
Though I hope this drop is a success, can't say I agree it should be part of the Ultralight Community! :-). Eg., Sawyer Mini weighs in at only 3oz and comes with a lifetime warranty (>100,000 gallons). It's a different filtering technology though...the Katadyn ceramic filter will probably catch chemicals, whereas the Sawyer won't.
If you are looking for a bombproof, endgame water filter, this is it. This will last a lifetime, plus, with proper care.
It's a little heavier and slower than some other models on the market (MSR, PUR, other Katadyns for example), but this thing is built like a Rolls Royce, with milled metal parts. The others are fine, but feel like toys in comparison. This has a great internal ceramic filter which will last for decades or more with normal care.
I actually have three of the original version of this filter. Got them brand new from various thrift stores over the years. I know, crazy. Cheap, too.
This is an expensive filter, but if you actually use these a lot, it's reliable performer and a good long term investment.
