A quick update for you all! We've been in touch with the vendor and they've let us know that they are nearly finished packaging the individual orders and everything is still set to ship out by early next week. We will continue to check in with them and update the group as soon as everything has gone out!
Thanks for your patience and expect an update from us by the end of the day Pacific Time on 7/22 or sooner if something comes up.

It's a go! The order for the Katadyn Pocket Water Filter was placed just after the drop came to an end. Now our vendor will be working hard to prepare it for shipment to each of you.
As soon as we receive word from the vendor about the shipping schedule, we will update you all with that information.
Look forward to another update from us by the end of the day Pacific Time on 7/17 or earlier if anything comes up.

I know this drop just ended but is it too late to claim one of the unsold filters? The drop was limited to 8 units but I don't believe they all sold.

Something cheaper, like the Vario, would have been more in my price range...

I have been looking at these since the 80's when the original was all aluminum and looked a bit tougher than they do now. The black color just makes it seem like it is made of plastic instead of aluminum IMHO. Even way back then they sold for $150. Wish I had purchased one of those back then, I would probably still own it. I saw the lower price and could not pass it up. The field cleanable filter and solid construction are great features. Who wants to carry extra filters or have their clean water producer broken out in the field?

SirWilliamSirWilliam.
If I am correct, the original version (with the white body) also had a plastic torso. That is, the white tube in the middle is also plastic, not aluminum.
Was there an all aluminum version? If so, I'm not aware of it. Thus, I believe this newer version is no leass durable than the original one.
Anyhow, I have three of the old white bodied version filters, which I believe is the original model. I always marvel at how precise and solid the pumping action is. Truly a quality product.
Because of how much heavier and bombproof this filter is, it is a great choice for a home survival kit, or situations where failure of your water filter is not an option.
If you're doing a 2 or 3 day hike, then a lighter but less durable model, like a Katadyn Hiker (PUR) or one of the MSR models, like the Sweetwater, would do you fine.

K.T.NAs a less expensive option I would recommend Katadyn Combi (if you don't mind plastic body). It has the same filter longevity as Pocket plus it has a built-in carbon filter and optionally can be used with faucet mount adaptor.
You also have an option to directly attach Nalgene bottle to bottom flange of the Combi. It's a bit larger than Pocket, but not by much. May be Massdrop can do that one, too.

I have back packed all over the Sierras and other areas as well. This is an amazing product. Get rid of the iodine tablets and buy this filter. You will not be sorry. Also buy a colapable bucket...that will help too. Cheers..
