are people really hiking with these? I mean, if you are into lightweight hiking this seems pointless if you need to carry it on top of a sauce pan that can do the same thing.

DetexNot pointless if you just need to boil water - a short fat kettle will boil water very efficiently (think fuel savings) compared to a tall narrow pot. In my experience, a 1l kettle (Ti or hard anodized) is just about perfect for a group of two, and one boil is enough to rehydrate a meal and make a hot drink for both. I use a GSI kettle, which is tough, light, and holds my stove, fuel cannister, lighter, dropper bottle of suds, foldable spoon, and small towel. I haven't seen these Keith Ti kettles in person, but they look a little bit taller than I might consider ideal (harder to pack and less surface area for heating on the base than a short/squat kettle).

idoc72Right, but we are talking about ultralight, if that is the case you just added an extra pot to the mix where a lidded pan would probably suffice.

Detexyeah and aluminum is just as light as titanium, so you could boil wwter in a soda can and save a ton of money, right?
