Would love to hear from Massdrop why they think this should be classified in the "ultralight" category. For real you need a "car camping" community.

lorsungcuThis tent is pretty light for the cost and size. I use it backpacking.

lorsungcu@lorsungcu - Thanks for posting and your question is fair. This is a free standing, double-wall 2-person tent that will actually protect you in bad weather. Please tell me which tent is lighter and costs $100? It may not be light by your standards, but for someone on an extreme budget, it is the lightest we could find. Same goes for the Kelty Cosmic sleeping bags - sure there are lighter bags, but for the price those are the best. I try really hard to offer the lightest products for budget and intended use. And I am totally serious that if you find a better tent for about the same price, let me know and I'll try to make it available for the community!

DannyMilks@DannyMilks - This is the ultralight category. They just had a small piece of titanium for sale for like $30. How does a >4lb tent work with that, exactly? Maybe renaming to something like "camping equipment of varying weight classes under $100" would be more appropriate. This isn't ultralight, by any stretch of the imagination. The category has been diluted to the point where I have to argue that a two person tent this large and heavy is not ultralight. I'd love to see actual, try-hard ultralight stuff. I don't need to see run-of-the-mill tents at objectively small discounts. Focusing on getting real ultralight stuff at market prices is way more important than making sure you've got the best tent for the local boy scout chapter. Or rename the whole thing, like I said. In the mean time, I will lower my expectations appropriately.

DannyMilks@DannyMilks - Thank you for continuing to offer budget alternatives for lightweight backpacking. Please take the grumblings of snooty gram weinies with a grain of salt. We can't all aford the most expensive gear, and I appreciate the effort that goes into finding affordable and practical products. Keep it coming. Also, have you looked into the Kelty Range Tarp as a lightweight affordable shelter?

J-birdNobody is saying they shouldn't offer these things, just that there should be another category. This is far from ultralight, cost is irrelevant to that fact, even if its the lightest in the price range.

J-birdHe's not suggesting that only the best, expensive gear should be offered, just that it should be labeled appropriately. Full disclosure: I own this tent and love it (I actually just used it on Friday out of my car), but it is in no way whatsoever an "ultra-light" tent by any standards.

DannyMilksI have to agree, but really it's not a big deal. Maybe a "Camping" community would be a good category to add. That said, Massdrop and the UL community are not so busy that it's difficult to scroll past or ignore the non-ultralight products. The words/terms get blurry, especially these days, but "ultralight" really just refers to a pack base weight of under 10 pounds...not to individual pieces of gear. To that end, however, the Big Three for UL gear lists are generally 2lbs or less each. For a two-person tent, it should be below or very close to 3lbs to have any hope of making a UL list. This is a perfectly backpackable tent, well made and at a super price point, but it's a far cry from approaching ultralight. The current hammock suspension deal is another great example of a "camping" item rather than an ultralight one, considering that it weighs 3-4 times as much as a good ul hammock suspension setup. Just my friendly two cents.
