I got a pair of Koss ESP950's for $522.31 from Amazon's warehouse deals on an open box return. The retail packaging was a bit beat up but everything inside was as new. I cannot see spending $700 for the better model. All I care about is the sound quality not the bragging rights that the cups are made out of 2000 year old bog wood. That just sounds elitest to me.
Wow these headphones look amazing! But you know a 1/3 of the price is for that wood....
Let god bless all of you with Peace. My 2 cents on this whole issue of "MSRP" ... let's keep it simple and this is my solution to which you may or may not agree with: If you like what you see and can afford it then buy if you need it and if not then don't .,,
Hmm, If it were me, I would just go over to Fischer Audio's site, and order each piece of this headphone separately, and pay $100 less. Sure, the pads are a protein leather and the cups are not bog wood, just regular wood, but you get the better, titanium coated driver. I did this a while back and went with the nice metal headband, ti coated drivers with the magano wooden cups, and I ordred the full leather Brainwavz HM5 pads from MP4.net. All in I was like $253, and I love the setup.
Lets be real here, you are paying for the Kennerton name. In the end, these are just yet another re-branded Yoga CD880 (along with the HM5, NVX 100, FA003 etc...) Don't buy these and overpay by $100. Pick the wood you want and get them from Fischer Audio if you really want them. At $250 they are worth it, but not $350.
Why is it only one year warranty on this. On kennerton website the warranty for standard version is THREE YEARS.
"Assembled by hand in Russia", passing by, guys, passing by.
reddyone
Yup, majority of the arts are made in China by OEM Yoga, minus the wooden cups I believe. Then they are shipped to parent company Fischer Audio in Russia and assembled. You can order each piece of this headphone individually between the Fischer Audio and Kennerton websites.
reddyone
Russophobic much?
Wait a minutes, should it be Magister if we are paying $349.99? The Light Magister is $488.99 MSRP, this is not a 61% off.
I was in the completely botched THX00 drop. To see that they are listing this completely misleading drop after that disaster is simply further damaging Massdrop's credibility. I was hoping this would be a good alternative to the THX00s that we are no longer getting. Looks like it's just another sketchy drop.
Jackhattan
ditto
So, what do they sound like?
2000 year old bog oak? This begs the question of this being sustainable. I would like to see some confirmation that it is.
j-tech
it isn't.
These sound fine, but are more for the look and the "story" than the sound. And that's fine, they're cool pieces of you have the money. The THX00 (in all its variants) is a better sounding headphone.
The listing is confusing at best, and comes across as purposely disingenuous. $349 listing is for "Light" version, and MSRP of $888 is for the "upgrade" to the regular Magister version, which would be ~$700 if you actually purchased it here. They are mixing the two prices (Light: $349.99 with MSRP of the upgrade ($888)), making it look like there is a huge discount when the actual discount is going from $488 on their website to $349. http://kennerton.com/index.php?route=product/category&path=59 . Whether it was done on purpose or is a mistake doesn't matter. It should be changed.

I'd say it could slide as just a confusing way of listing 2 product versions on 1 drop, but it says "61% off" on the main drop page, which is false advertising, mistaken or not. People are saying "yeah, but MSRP is BS anyway"...that just isn't the case on this particular product. The MSRP is what the price is on Kennerton's site, not just an inflated number, and it's not even the MSRP of the product advertised. I'm a big fan of Massdrop and if it's a mistake they need to fix it. Someone is thinking they're getting an $888 product at 61% off. That's the only reason I clicked on the product description.
wontonotnow
This part does bother me too, hence my earlier suggestion for updated MSRPs per option, and probably a better way to represent the discount. It's not a difficult issue to correct on their end.
The overall structure reminds me of Q-Pad gaming headset or the HyperX Cloud/Cloud II's.
These look like the have the same headband and earcup hinges as the FA-003 (Brainwavz HM5 clone). I would stay clear of these if I were anyone else. The earcup hinges on my HM5 broke after about 7 months of use when I bought them about 3 years ago. Perhaps Fischer Audio had updated the design but looking at the pics, I am not so hopeful. Hopefully, the drivers for anyone else make up for it.
Anyone know the weight of each model?
Do "Light" and "standard" have the same Titanium or Titanium coated drivers?
nihon
No, the light's have no titanium coated dome, look at their site
michabarlev
Oh,maybe the light is just good-looking.
Magister standard has the Bog Oak Pyramid?
the question is not worth it, you want it, but do you NEED it?
DDTRR
I've asked myself that question SO many times while browsing this site, haha.
If I already have the Fostex TH-X00, are these worth it?

I wondered the same thing. I have the Purpleheart X-00:s and absolutely love them.
Jimbobler1
Me to, i have the PH as well. if they sound similar then there's no point of getting these. that's why a review from someone objective like zoes that listened to the TH-X00 could come in handy.
Anyone know the weight of the "light' and standard models?
These looks like they have so much potential! I really want them... but, they are too expensive for a spontaneous purchase. If only Z reviews can approve those cans before the drop ends...
LIBY555
Ahh, Z reviews, the best entertainment in the audio review youtube world. I never trust his opinion, but find that I watch ever video anyway cause he is just so entertaining.
givemeyourshoes
Actually i find his recommendation to be accurate in most cases, and agreeing with almost everything he's says about headphones i have or use to have. also he's reviews IMO are unbribed and truthful so i trust him to deliver his true opinion and not some product that he got paid to review and giving a false review on it. Yes he's reviews are also very fun to watch, because all of that he is so popular among audio enthusiast , and have a loyal fan community.
Correct me if I'm wrong please... is the prod description telling me that the Lite @ $389 is the same as the full Magister except for the earcup material and the cable? Did I miss something? The jump to full Magister sounds like a lot for some leather and a cable.

Absolutely no idea. I only have the standard version and got no light version around anywhere I can compare.
Material-wise, if Fischer Audio FA003 is any indication of the artificial leather for the Magister light, then the standard is a lot better. Not sure how much it worths, but definitely not $300+ on material alone. IMHO.
I don't think either option is worth it, to be honest. I've tried the entire Kennerton line, and was impressed with the higher end Odin, but the price just rules it out. This, you have better options, even just here on MD.
So basically the Fisher FA-003 or the Brainwavz HM-5 with wooden cups and some leather and an insane pricetag.
razorblader
Pretty much. The cups, if genuine, could be worth quite something, but please put them on something a bit more exciting.
Revanna
Like nice rims on a Prius, a bit of a waste. You get pyramids though for $ 699.99 so that has got to count for something...
What's the difference between the lite and regular ones? I'm only finding reviews for the regular ones.

They have the same ear cups and Titanium coated drivers?
Blze001
I believe that the lite version does not include the ti-coasted driver either. Having the both the ti coated driver on a FA-003 with Magano wooden cups, and the non-ti coasted driver on the Brainwavz HM5, I can say you will really want the ti coated driver. It really fixes the issues the non-coasted driver has, and makes it a very nice headphone to listen to. Mostly, it cleans up the mid range and adds a bit of air to the treble.
