not sure where people are getting only $50 off from. (unless massdrop had some price incorrect originally), as this amp is $1700 shipped. with three people joining, that gets the discount to ~$180 shipped.
Got a chance to hear once of these at Canlanta, and it's a great amp. worth the price? Harder to say, but it absolutely blows something like the bottlehead crack out of the water. They're not even in the same class. This is more comparable to something like an ECP L2.
Also not sure where you've ever seen a 50% discount on this amp? It's a handwired boutique amp. It's not PCB, everything is done by hand, inspected by hand and diligently QC checked. Now, I get if that's not your type of thing, but that's what this is.

fjrabonI bought my own ECP L2 for around the same price, and I have a hard time imagining this darling scheme amp can measure up. It looks well-built, though, and the casework is excellent.
Nothing wrong with offering higher-end gear, guys, and I imagine they priced the drop amounts properly. Should be able to sell 3 of them -- I'll bet someone out there has been hesitating to pull the trigger on one, and that price drop will make the difference.

Sherwoodyeah, different sounds obviously, but I think they're in a comparable class. It's more forgiving than the ECP L2 and TIII. I'm a sucker for as much dynamicism as possible, so like you, I prefer the ECP house sound, but this amp is absolutely what a lot of people want to "warm up and soften" the HD800.

fjrabonHeresy! I say all this, of course, without having heard the Kenzie. I have a hard time beliving *anything* can live up to the L2, but Doug assures me it's possible and, in fact, in the works. Heaven forfend.

SherwoodI slightly preferred the newest maxed out TIII to the L2, those output CCS are really game changers on that amp. And doug's latest solid state amp is a revelation (unfortuntately there won't be a beezar kit build of it, as it's way more complicated).
Again, to be clear, I personally think the L2 and TIII are better than this amp, but I also can see the allure of this sort of sound with the HD800. It's a very euphonic amp, great for people who want to split the difference between the HD800 and HD650 tone wise, while maintaining the HD800's soundstage.
