Like their names imply, the Kershaw Hops and Malt knives are trusty little everyday blades that come in handy when you need to open a bottle of your favorite brew. Designed by custom knifemaker Gustavo Cecchini, both are made of 8Cr13MoV steel and feature his distinctive sculpted two-tone handles Read More
His (GTC—Gustavo T. Cecchini) customs made in his shop in Brazil are so incredibly awesome! Now that he has production models (Kershaw/ZT and Böker Plus), his genius gets into more hands, however, the cheaply constructed knockoffs are so terribly inferior to the Originals that I wonder where his head is... Sorry, Gus, but as a collector fortunate enough to either possess (second hand as they are otherwise ‘out-of-my-league’, lol) or have handled your Originals, I ache for you and your Art when I think of all the good people who will be disappointed or turned off by these knives. I bought the Böker Plus version of the ‘Federal’ custom and was shocked at how the heavy blade rattled and slammed against its stops on closing and deployment and how they made the titanium slabs feel so cheap. For those collectors that have any of these knives and like them, I apologize to you if I’m coming off as dramatically negative or even condescending but you would be incredibly impressed by how much more amazing the original models really are. (PS. The Zero Tolerance version of the ‘Airborne‘ is still pretty awesome, though...and I have a custom!) :)
Is it just me, or do the proportions of the hops look way off? Reminds me of one of my grandpop’s old knives that had been sharpened so many times half the blade was gone.
I for one adore the fact that the flipper tab is shaped like a damn hook. I love needing two hands and multiple attempts in order to extract a blade from my pocket . It is my opinion that this design choice was made to purposefully handicap this model. Why? I prefer not to speculate. Oh, of course! It's a bottle opener....
LazerfluxThe flippers with the pointy tabs are bad enough. These bottle opener hooks look like they’re chomping at the bit, waiting to gouge a hand reached into a pocket for change.
