I've got a Kershaw that I bought here on Massdrop. Started out extremely sharp, now, not so much. Does anyone have a recommendation for the best sharpening kit. I've sharpened wood sculpting chisels (a while ago now!) on oil and water stones, so am not a total novice, but I've no idea what the best thing to do for this steel is.

robert.harrisYou can use your stones to sharpen any Kershaw (or virtually any knife) if you have the skills. Knife sharpening is invariably going to be different than sharpening chisels because chisels have just that - a chisel grind which is only one side of the blade. You're just going to have to adjust your method for equal strokes on each bevel. If you want a system, I have both the Edge Pro Apex and the Spyderco Sharpmaker - get the Sharpmaker. You can get a more than usable edge with just the rods that ship with it. If you want closer to razor sharp, add a pair (sold individually) of the UF ceramic rods and even a strop. On the other band of the spectrum - for heavily dulled, damaged edges or a minor regrind, get a set of the diamond or CBN rods and then set aside few hours...because depending on the severity this can take awhile. Don't get me wrong, the Apex is a top notch system, but for comparative cost, my opinion is the Spyderco is the superior value. Quicker to set up and learn and for most tasks, just the time and mess saved not having to soak the rods (wash and dry after use recommended) has it out and put away before I could even have the angle set on the Edge Pro.

robert.harrisRobert, the Spyderco Sharpmaker is pretty awesome, especially if you are new to sharpening.
