If anyone has one of these they want to sell let me know. I assume this knife will likely never return to MD.
I've owned a Knockout ( sandvik 14C28N ) for approx. 3 years now, and due to it's slim build and generous blade, it has rarely left my pocket (all my other EDC folders are jealous). I love that it performs like a big folder, but takes up so little real estate in the (front) pocket. The sandvik steel is decent, but I use my knives hard and have been lusting for the elmax version since I heard they were releasing one... (I have an elmax compact custom fixed blade of my own design that is my EDC work knife and it's a beast: the impact resistance and lateral strength of elmax is impressive). If the elmax Knockout ever comes back to Massdrop, SIGN ME UP :)
Any chance that this drop will ever see the light of day again?
Received today! It's larger than I thought, feels about 1" longer than my Spyderco Native 5, though the specs say it's more like .6". Great looking knife, grip feels good, blade is nice and meaty, finish is subtle but nicely done. Thanks massdrop!

Looking forward to seeing this knife in person. Just grabbed an s35vn Spyderco Native 5 from bladeforum, will be fun to play with the two steels and see how they compare.

It's a great knife. It's a bit big though, although it's still carry-able. Be advised - the action is quite a bit stiff. Using the thumb studs to open it is quite hard and if your hands are not big enough to complete the full range of movement it might stop halfway. It gets better though, and performs admirably.

A quick update for you all! A first batch of the group's order arrived early to our warehouse today and many individual orders have already shipped out. The second batch is scheduled to arrive Monday and our team will be standing by ready to break down the shipment as soon as it comes in. We'll be sure to update the group again as soon as everything has gone out to you!
Thanks for your patience and expect an update from us by the end of the day Pacific Time on 7/8 or sooner if something comes up.
I was the second participant in this group and ordered 2 knives. Paid with PayPal and waited diligently for the drop to end.
After the drop ended, I got an email that my PayPal payment ran into a problem, and was given a very short period of time to log in and re do the payment.
Well, I work 13-14 hours a day during certain parts of the summer and missed the, essentially, one waking day window in which to check my email and re do the payment. Because my work hours are so long, I didn't check my email until the next morning and it wouldn't let me pay.
Right then, I wrote an email asking for an extension of the period, and followed up with two emails a day, and two days after the first. I have received no reply.
This has happened once before, and the rep extended the deadline to re do the payment by another day.
This has nothing to do with my PayPal account being short of cash - there's more than enough there.
I feel like I've been screwed, here. I was really looking forward to this drop and by no fault of my own, some payment issue between Massdrop and PayPal has left me in the cold. And I'm not getting any replies to my emails.
What the hell is going on, here?

I responded to your support ticket earlier today. Please check my response as I have explained the situation.

Hi, Kelly. Thanks for your response and thanks for taking care of it. I appreciate it.
So the issue is that if you pay with PayPal, and then decide to increase the quantity later via your purchase history page, it will show up as a payment error when the drop ends (since the final purchase price is higher than what you originally authorized with PayPal). And you will be booted from the drop.
So if you are using PayPal and want to increase quantity, first cancel your original order. Then put in a new order with the new quantity.
That makes total sense. I didn't make the connection and didn't understand why this problem would come up periodically.
Thanks for explaining it, Kelly, and for taking care of my purchase. Much appreciated!
It’s a go! Thanks to all of you for being a part of this successful drop. We have submitted the group’s order with the vendor for the Kershaw Knockout ELMAX Blade. They are currently preparing the shipment and once we receive it at our warehouse in New Jersey, we’ll separate everything into individual orders and send them out to you! We expect your orders will be in transit from our warehouse by 7/9.
In the meantime, we’ll do everything we can to update you on information we receive from the vendor about your order status so you know the location of your order throughout the process.
Thanks again for being a part of this community! You can expect an update from us by the end of the day Pacific Time on 7/2 .
I'm in Canada, and ordered one a little while ago. I got a nice little letter saying that is has been seized as a prohibited weapon.
I sent a letter of appeal, but so far have not heard back. I just talked with a Customs official on the phone today, and he said it'll be a couple weeks before I hear anything.
So...just be aware. I might still get the knife, I might not. Probably also depends on the individual inspecting it.
Update (2 months later): it's been deemed prohibited. I could pursue it at the federal level. I'm not sure what I'm going to do about it yet.
I just wrote out my appeal as well, stating direct quotes from the Customs Tariff (9898.00.00.00) why this knife should not be classified as prohibited. Hoping for a positive outcome.
Unfortunately once it's been seized, they won't want to change their minds which might make them look incompetent.
I had one knife taken by the CBSA over the years and they didn't care that you could buy the same knife from retailers in Canada.
They recently got an extra $5 million or so in funding from Harper, isn't it nice to see our taxes being put to good use....
If you are interested in other quality folders as well, you should check out this poll https://www.massdrop.com/vote/cold-steel-tri-ad-lock-folding-knives?referer=F5MP7B
Note to all Canadian customers: Even though it is an option to order, this is an assisted-open knife, prohibited by federal law, and Border Services will stop it in transit.

You're mistaken. Federal law specifically exempts knives that use a torsion bar or spring assist as long as manual force is required to begin moving the blade.

They sell Kershash Speed Assist like this and many others at every Sports Store and Cabellas in Canada.
Hey everyone,
Unfortunately the Blackwash blades are all sold out. These Elmax Knockouts were a limited run by Kershaw and are not continually produced. Stonewash is the only finish we will have going forward (and only for a limited time while there is still stock available.)
Picked one of these up the last time it was on drop and haven't regretted it for a second. Fantastic blade. Shaving-sharp out of the box, excellent ergonomics, and (to me, at least) pleasant, understated aesthetics.
I also really hope they can add some blackwash versions.. I really love those! Also, are the customs a problem when they would send this to Europe (Belgium)?
iCrunch
I don't know that for Belgium... I live in Austria and people regularly import knives from throughout the world. You'd have to check your government sites for restrictions.
The following should apply for Belgium (translated):
The following knives are currently prohibited by law in Belgium: Bayonets, switchblades, balisongs (butterfly knives), throwing knives as well as knives that pretend to be another object (f.e. hidden in girdles, penholder knives or walking stick rapiers). All other cutting tools are legal but you need a legitimate reason to have them with you.
In practice, this means: The law was relaxed. Fixed blades and exclusively manually operated folding knives with locking are not explicitly prohibited. Whether they are conducted legally, is decided by the legitimate reason. One should assume that the ownership of each knife is generally considered illegal, as long as you can't plausibly explain legal reason for it.
Particular caution should be exercised in public events: A knife, even if it is only a small folding knife without locking mechanism that you carry when visiting a football match , may cause arrest and punishment. In any case you have to transport a knife in a way that doesn't allow direct access to it (f.e. in the trunk of your car).
Hope that helps...
Okay, you convinced me. I joined in. Nevertheless I hope they can still come up with a few blackwash ones in the 7 days to come... I'd take one anyways but I'd still prefer the black one I initially requested for (well... I requested for both, nvm.)
I own a Kershaw Blur, Zero Tolerance 0566 and ZT 0561 in Elmax and I've liked all those blades. The relatively thin Blur blade makes it quite a good slicer and very sharp. Haven't needed to sharpen them besides the occassional stropping to keep them pointy. I chalk up Elmax issues to forumites complaining and making a mountain out of a molehill on a relatively few number of defects.
I got the backwash last drop - it's an awesome blade! No problems here with the Elmax.
I so desperately wanted the blackwash ELMAX version and requested the other day. Now there's only stonewash. Any chance you could add the blackwash to the drop? This is kind of my dream of an elegant working folder and I'd really love to have a black one...
BTW: Did any of you guys who got it on the last drop have a problem with ELMAX? E.g. there seems to be controversy about the edge being overheated in manufacture and therefore not holding an edge very well.

Kershaw/ZT's ELMAX had some burnt edge (either HT or grinding, don't think they ever went public about the actual cause) problems in a batch or 2 when they first started making them, causing a lot of drama that didn't do much good for the popularity of the steel. I haven't seen any reports of the problem since though, and it's been reported to have better wear resistance, toughness and corrosion resistance than S35VN by quite a few that gave it a go.
You shouldn't have many issues with sharpening it either. Its toughness (it's been used in several larger custom fixed blades at around 58-60 HRC without issues afaik - the toughness has been said to be comparable to that of carbon steels) should prevent most chipping, and it's said to be easier to get a mirror polish on it than most steels.

I'm able to test edges with an instrument I have from EdgeonUp ... I use mostly for comparisons of scissors I import and/or sharpen.... and for knife work. It gives me a measurement base that I can compare efficacies of various edgework , steels and destructive testing. After an edges initial break-in ... the point where apical longevity plateaued its still a very stable and acute edge.... on mine.
I bought one of these in the previous drop. I love this knife. The Elmax is really nice and the finish on the handle is too. Definitely worth $90!
Is there another blackwash version coming?
got it. love it.
Just got mine through here in England. Love it - absolutely mental value for the blade steel, quality and action. Cheers again MD!

Glad you're enjoying it!
Just got mine today and first impressions are strong! It feels good in the hand and everything looks good.

@Tyler.HDo you think it'll be possible to secure a few blackwash ones? Otherwise I'd have to act quick so the stonewash blades aren't gone while I wait...
@desertbluesDid you (or did you have to) sharpen your Knockout yet? I'm kind of curious what kind of an edge it takes. As I usually sharpen and polish up to razor sharpness I'm not to keen on a blade that doesn't allow a lasting sharp edge. As a former knifemaker I had a few situations where i couldn't get S30V/S40V or M390 to a proper lasting sharpness (chipping out chunky carbides due to too high hardness maybe...).
I would have loved to see the olive edition but this would have been my second choice anyway.
