I usually look to Massdrop for special or interesting items but this knife has been out for a while. I don't see anything different here. Having owned one, I can tell you that it is "okay". The handle shape is comfortable. The texturing works without being too rough. The pocket clip is attractive but it does create a bit of a hot-spot. The steel is 8Cr13Mov and that's not great. It is easy to sharpen but won't hold an edge as well as 14C28N, 9Cr18Mov, Acuto 440, etc. It is also less resistant to corrosion and the bead-blasted finish won't do you any favors in that department. Make sure to keep it clean and oiled.
CromulentMassdrop is all of those things. Group-buying allows for special buying, whether it be a special price, a special edition, or whatever. That's what sets this place apart from normal retailers. I offered a quick review of the item and lamented that not much was special here. I think that's valid because this is a common item for sale about halfway between the current prices on Amazon and eBay.
"Yes, this one can ship international!" Was the first thing I thought. Finally a nice looking inexpensive Kershaw folder which I could buy... "sorry, we can't ship this knife to addresses outside the US, please use a different address".
Grrrr :-(
@Massdrop, Please change the "Note:" description. Now many people are getting excited for nothing.
I use them all the time, you open an account, they give you a US address and forward your US mail to your home address. I'm in NZ, so our post office has one in US, Europe and China. Not sure which country you are in, but there is bound to be a service; unless you are in Somalia or something... Even then, I wouldn't be surprised if there is someone operating one; just charging an appropriate amount ;-)
consolationThanks for your reply and information, I will look into the matter later on. As I live in the Netherlands I think there should be a chance there is an possibility.
jmicI work for a company (Snap-on Tools ) who sells a lot of Kershaw knives (both Kershaw branded and private-branded). Recently Canada Customs decided to make all SpeedSafe knives illegal to import into in Canada as they said that they are too close to being a switchblade. The SpeedSafe opening function doesn't meet the customs importation criteria that we have always had for switchblades but until they change their policy we are not bringing any Kershaw SpeedSafe knives into Canada.
Just a warning if you wanted to order one that it might be refused at the border.
I gifted one of these to my son last year. One of the very best economy knives available, IMO. Well designed and executed. Easy to keep razor sharp with a Sharpmaker or similar.
