Kershaw makes good budget knives. The Zing is made from 8cr13mov stainless steel, a good budget steel for the money that sharpens fairly easy, gets razor sharp and hold an edge a reasonable amount of time for it's price. The handle obviously lacks any kind of texture so it might get a little slick. The blade shape and design of this knife make it more of a gentlemen's EDC rather than a substitute for a multitool. Any prying you attempt is likely to snap the narrow tip, as it's designed more for slicing or piercing. As with any knife this one will need maintaining: cleaning after use, periodically sharpening, lubrication, adjusting of the pivot screw when necessary, and keep an eye on screws backing out and maybe applying a bit of threadlock. Idiots who don't maintain their knives and then complain deserve what they get. There is no such thing as a maintenance free knife that stays sharp all by itself.
As for price, this is $1.89 less than Amazon right now, but you have to pay $2.75 shipping, so if you have free prime shipping or are ordering $25+ then the Amazon price is better. This knife was $12.99 about a year ago from one retailer, but they charge pretty high shipping and I don't think that price is coming back.
If you want this knife then this is a good price for it, but not so much that you can't pass it up if you aren't in love with this particular knife.

rshveydaI can't see why anyone would use a knife as a pry bar. It seems like such a bad idea. The disassembly on this knife is a bit more complicated due to the Speed Safe assist. Side note, when disassembling an assisted knife, make sure you use proper grease on the spring (if you don't, it'll rattle).
Overall it's a pretty decent knife for the price, and the MSRP on the drop is way off.

MaxwellDemonicI agree on not using a knife as a pry bar, but it's amazing how many online reviews are posted with the author complaining "garbage steel, knife tip broke after a little light prying." It's right up there with complaints about stiff deployment or a knife getting dull from folks who don't know how to adjust, lubricate or sharpen a knife. Oh, and the old "used the knife to cut a lemon at work and it was rusted the next day when I took it out of my lunch box. What a POS!" Some people don't know how to take care of their tools.

rshveydaCompletely agree. Soon as my blades get dull I break out my stones and get to sharpening. It's amazing how a little bit of care and maintenance can improve a knife. The Bestech Tercel came with a middling action, all it took was cleaning out the heavy grease they used and replacing it with Nano-oil to make the action buttery smooth.
On the topic of the Zing, mine has permanent loctite in the pivot threads so opening it isn't really an option unless I break out my heat gun or a soldering iron. I'm reluctant to use heat like that since it uses Teflon washers. I'm also not super happy about said washer being exposed on the back side of the blade (in the lock bar gap).

Right there with you. Kershaw has a problem with large lock bar gaps that expose the washers and pivots—I love my Eris, but damn, that gap is a mm shy of the width between the scales on my Leek. Another issue is ridiculously small washers to make room for the damn Speedsafe bar to attach to the blade. I'm convinced narrow washers are more susceptible to blade play—wider washers have more surface area that prevents side-to-side movement. The AM-5 washers are narrower than the head of the pivot!

LMNOBeastAbsolutely. Also I had another fun surprise. I got some Nano-grease so I was finally equipped to clean and relube my Zing. I opened it up to find the teflon washers had worn through and fell apart leaving only those tiny metal washers. Now it's pretty much completely !@#$ed on the action and blade centering.

Double check the thickness, but I bought a pouch of these to replace all my teflon/nylon washers. Polish them on a strop or fine grit paper and you'll significantly improve the action.

rshveyda There is no such thing as a maintenance free knife that stays sharp all by itself. Actually, there is. I have a Steel Will Cutjack that I have not taken out of the box. I agree with the content of your post.
