Woot, I think I figured it out! First of all, using windows emulation frameworks like Wine, Crossover etc. was a complete no go. The basic problem is that getting those frameworks direct USB access to the Keywalker doesn't work. So you can run the program, but it can't find the keyboard, all you get is a little popup "keyboard not connected" or something. Bleah.
Harder core virtualization was needed. But the sticking point is that you still need Windows and I wasn't interested in buying a whole copy of Windows just to run this one program. I could have tried running some Windows emulation on Linux on Mac, but then you're back in the same problem from above. I also briefly thought about bootcamp etc. but I'd still have the USB emulation+passthrough problem unless I installed windows directly.
VirtualBox to the rescue! VirtualBox has pretty robust emulation/connection tools and a plethora of different images. At first I thought I'd have to "borrow" a working Windows image to run the program, but Microsoft makes free images available for testing purposes.
- The tools https://github.com/GonzaloAlvarez/ifd68 - Some handy instructions, most of which apply for the Mac version of VirtualBox: https://sites.google.com/site/easylinuxtipsproject/oldgrub - Free and totally legal IE images (I used IE8) from Microsoft: https://developer.microsoft.com/en-us/microsoft-edge/tools/vms/
Extremely abbreviated and probably incomplete instructions for legally reprogramming your Keywalker on a Mac:
- Clone https://github.com/GonzaloAlvarez/ifd68 to your Mac. - Download VirtualBox. - Download free IE8 VM image from Microsoft website. - Install IE8 VM. - Install Virtual Box tools to VM. - Reboot (many times). - Share cloned ifd68 directory through VirtualBox. - Plug in IFD68 keyboard to USB port. - Add IFD68 keyboard to VM via Devices -> USB menu item. - Navigate to shared ifd68 directory in the VM, it's on the network - Run fd68/software/original/programmer/IFD68.exe and Bob's your uncle!
That was easy, right! ;-)
Anyways, I reprogrammed my my CapsLock key to now be the left ctrl key and I am a happy camper! Using the Keywalker in bluetooth mode right now to type these instructions. Many thanks to GonzaloAlvarez, Oracle, and Microsoft for providing the tools I used for this.
Anybody been able to get the caps lock key remapped to ctrl for a Mac? I'm running macOS High Sierra 10.13.6 on a MacBook Pro (13-inch late-2013) and when I connect via Bluetooth and go to the Keyboard -> Modifier Keys drop down the Keywalker doesn't show up in the drop down to modify. The reprogramming functionality seem to be exclusively Windows only. Am I SOL?
Any updates as if these are getting shipped today? So pumped!
Can I change keybindings for volume up, volume down, skip and go back in tracks, and play/pause? Also, what kind of lighting effects can I do? Is there per-key lighting customization?
):,,,, Why couldn't cherry mx silvers be an option. It'd be perfect ):
Anyone know what kind of replacement case/keycaps I can get for this?
joshualan
I'm assuming that it would probably not be possible to get a replacement (aluminium) case for this, because this keyboard has a battery.
For keycaps, you can pick any set that you like, as long as it has a 1.75u shift (or blank) key.
Can someone lay down actual battery life figures when lights are on? and when its lights are off? and perhaps if someone tested its idle mode life.

Oh, the battery pack is plenty for routine use, you'll need to charge it, it's not a logitech mouse that you put one AA into when you buy it and forget about for a year, but it's not been a problem for me unless it sat in my laptop bag turned on for a week.
dammit. I do not need another wireless keyboard. I do not need another wireless keyboard. I do not need another wireless keyboard.....
I would buy this board if I could find and play with the RGB specific version of the prgm utility. I have the IFD68 and I really like it and the information found here was perfect for the NON-RGB: https://github.com/GonzaloAlvarez/ifd68
Please add an official link to the firmware and utilities needed to make this work!
I'd like to just buy the keycaps... those are awesome. They would look awesome with some of my current keyboards.
Still trying to get the keywalker bluetooth pairing to work. I've got the switch turned on and I'm still not seeing it an option to connect to the computer. Anyone else have suggestions?
saigonwheat
Hold the function key and any of the these letters until the light under the key starts blinking: Q, W, E
These keycaps look awesome. They're pretty much the only reason I would buy this board.
  • FN+←=The efficiency of the lamp increases
  • FN+→=The lamp works less quickly

  • Wow. Just... wow.

we all start somewhere with a second language
There is no shipping to Italy?
Did anyone end up finding drivers for this? I won't buy until there are drivers available.

I downloaded the driver for IFD68 through their private QQ group with all the companies' developer in there... Pretty tricky and you have to master Chinese to do that
josphy
In case anyone here is curious and has QQ installed, their group number is 273585938
No, I want the other keywalker 68…
Would buy this if MX clears were an option :(

boolean-julien
Just put clears in it then. 😓
boolean-julien
I want silvers ):
I like the retro font but ... layout... is... no way. I need full size anyways, but that layout would murder me in my sleep.

Who uses arrow keys on vim?!
happytrees
I just let that slide but yeah that doesn't add up lol
The retro font reminds me of a style that I do not want to be reminded of.
Chriva5
Dare I ask?
how about key mapping, is that work with bluetooth ?
ForteD
I suggest not buying this keyboard, until manufacturer actually starts supporting it and put the website up www.keywalker.com www.keywalker.cn
So I recently got this and like an idiot installed an outdated firmware not meant for the rgb model Some of the rgb functions don't work and the caps, 5 and y keys are permanently blue, would anyone know where I could find the firmware or image files for this (.bin)?

Strange when I tried to flash, it said it's identical to what I have and I cancelled. I did ended up with tilde lighting blue, and even filled RMA before realizing that soft just put my board in programming mode. Pressing FN+tilde for 3 seconds fixed it. Make sure you are not in some mode, that you can exit by pressing right FN something combination.
dmitriyk
Yeah this is not a mode. The keyboard only uses one color after flashing and there's no way to return it to its original firmware unless I get the files for it or attempt programming it myself.
One thing I find funny is that there's a typo on the keycaps, the "insert" key (on the side of the "I" key) is mistakenly typed as "inster". OMG it bothers me so much, anybody know where to find a set of translucent keycaps that fits this keyboard?
has anyone got the bluetooth to work? The manual says Fn + Q/W/E but I keep pressing and zilch is happening. No indicator lights flashing, nothing pairing. Anyone else have these issues?

WHAT? There is?! I think you just saved me. I left it at work but can't wait to check this out tomorrow. I was only using it wired since it wouldn't connect. Had NO IDEA there was an on button. You rule.
horrorwriter
Yea so for anyone who is as dim as I, there's an on/off button at the bottom. Its tiny. Since my case was black I just missed it. BT now works flawlessly.
Just got mine, tried to download software from www.keywalker.cn (as indicated in the manual) and was greeted with coming soon sign. Where can I get customization soft, Massdrop?
Is anyone's caps lock LED acting up? Mine lights up fine when the lighting is solidly one color or when caps lock is active (before I reprogrammed the key of course) but will not light up in any of the moving modes such as merry-go-round. My space bar also pops up quite easily if I press it with my left thumb, causing the right side to become elevated. Sort of like a seesaw. I'm using DSA if that matters.
Hey, does anyone know if there's software for this? I wouldn't mind it being all in chinese, but I do want to be able to add more function layers
Uh... whats happening here. This was just open for orders less than 3 hours ago...
devbryce
A few days from what I saw. I know it had at least 3 days after I signed up.
Koatl
I am kinda curious if they had a limited amount they were allowing in this drop and just cut it early?
I really want clears on this keyboard. Anyway I can order them with Gatreon clears? Are the switches removable at all?

Pok3r is missing bluetooth. I wish there were more bluetooth mech keyboards... I need one for my media center PC.
basementboi
I agree. CLEARS PLEASE!
jesus those keycaps are ugly

Heh, I guess if you're a real enthusiast, you probably swap caps like shoes. I don't have any extra caps since I'm pretty ok with the stock caps most of the time... except these, of course.
techwiz
Lol yeah most of the fun for me with mech keys is the customization; I buy sets of caps even if I don’t have a board in mind. I probably just have a problem though!
Anyone know if the RGB backlighting is customizable for each individual key?
EDIT: Found this in the user manual: "Programmable: The keyboard can modify the color of the light & key value in wired mode, and the new data can be used in both wired and wireless mode after the data is saved."
