My friend told me that mass drop is a good place to get booster boxes at a great price, but I don't really don't understand how this works. The price doesn't seem to be any better than the LGS yet the money is not going to support a LGS. Also, you don't get the buy a box promo. Also mass drop doesn't seem to understand/attempt to meet the demand (over 500 requests gets a response of 75 buys after an initial sellout). I thought mass drop was supposed to leverage the power of crowdsourcing for better than otherwise available pricing. Unless I am missing somthing, I'm not sure why I waste my time with this website, for MTG cards at least.

sam.smithMass Drop needs to actually broker deals with wholesalers independently to complete their drops so most of their deals are constrained by how much stock a wholesaler is able to give them. That is why they have a finite limit on how many boxes they can procure. On new sets the initial supply for a preorder box is usually much lower than future drops will be. The price per box varies depending on the set being offered and the timing so some deals are better than others. As far as LGS prices go, the MSRP for a box of any regular Magic set is 150$, but some LGS sell boxes for less than that. If your LGS will do that, you're all set and you should shop there, but there are stores that adhere to MSRP and if that is the case then Mass Drop's prices look a lot friendlier. For me Mass Drop's price is about 40$cheaper than what my LGS would charge so I shop here.

sam.smithI'd imagine the disconnect between demand and supply is someone has to basically offer up MTG booster boxes at cost. Seeing as wizards doesn't do this directly, they need to find some wholesaler willing to sell boxes at cost to non-brick and mortar type thing like this site.
As far as the price. If you can get a booster box sub $100 from your local store. Get it there, I live in NYC. the prices are generally higher here. It's a bit hit or miss/check back often shopping on mass drop. but the prices are generally better than amazon/ebay. so if you get in on a drop, it's reliable and best price.

veritas723I missed the initial price point. At this point, my LGS all have these boxes marked up as they are still selling out. Heck, on TCGPlayer, the median is $109.05.
