Would have bought these in a heartbeat if I could get one piece of information that I can't find anywhere on the Internet. Does the microphone work if you don't use the USB dongle and plug the headset directly into a smartphone or 3-channel 3.5 mm port? Does ANYONE know the answer to this question. It's very important to me.

DeenSteenYes, it will work without the usb dongle. This headset utilizes a 4-pole 3.5mm connector that phones and ultrabooks use for both audio playback and microphone. It will also work with Dualshock 4 controllers with the PS4 (or the Xbox One with controller add-on). The original HyperX cloud uses separate 3.5mm connectors for audio and mic, which would require an adapter for mobile use. That's the only physical change to the headset unit itself (aside from colors, of course). All of this info is available on the HyperX website here: http://www.hyperxgaming.com/us/cloud/hscp. Pretty much all reviewers mention this info as well; it's even in their ads for the unit. The whole reason the mic is removable is so it can pull double-duty as a gaming headset and portable headphones.
