Another thing is the size: this thing is tiny compared to the big bricks the cheap ones are. If you just plan to check codes, that's cool, but driving around with that thing gets in my way, at least. Also, the cheap ones sometimes don't respond to certain communications, like from Fords. I tried to check a friend's truck once, and had to tell him I couldn't help him, whereas now I can.
And lastly, I recall reading somewhere that the cheap ones are basically just ripoffs of the R&D and time and money spent form companies such as PLX who go through the hassle of establishing how to communicate with the cars wirelessly and then profitingnoff of that with the cheapest parts they can. Not too sure how true or not that at all is, but again, if you're all good with a cheap one, it'll like do what you need it to. You don't have to join every buy.
