ObscenicAre the Massdrop OBD2 Reader & eBay OBD2 Scanner of similar quality & funtioning? I do not now enough about these items to answer this myself...

ObscenicKeep in mind the big thing with these devices is either Auto-Power off or Low Power Consumption. Cheap crap will almost always not care about either of these and may kill your battery just by leaving it in overnight. Just be warned, most spend extra on auto-power off.
EdgarThe one posted takes 45mA, which means (if true) it would run about 22 hours on an amp. If you drive your vehicle at least weekly you'd be fine, if you only drove monthly then you'd need lower draw or auto-shut off. This may not apply to a very small vehicle like a Smart Car, but even then, driving weekly should be easy. I think somewhere in the middle between the Kiwi and the eBay offering are the sweetspot.

RampantBiologicYep, not saying this Massdrop item is the one to get, just merely explaining what the difference between a cheap one and an expensive one might be when the differences are not clear. The other thing is that some of those cheap ebay items are difficult to return, not backed by a decent company, and not regulated. All those things could possibly lead to doing damage to your engine's computer, or at the very least possibly more power draw than reported or other weird behavior. Just some food for thought is all.

ObscenicRegardless of which alternative available one buys, if you're only using it for occasional diagnostics then the drop price is waaay too much for what you're actually getting. Models capable of auto shutoff aren't that much more than the cheapest amazon/eBay options. Regardless of how you try to spin it, this drop is too expensive. Simple as that.
