KavikAnyone had theirs apart yet? Can someone confirm if this is as it should be?
Bearings with steel washers on both sides (the milled bearing race is a nice touch to keep this slim), but nylon washer between the steel and titanium on one half only??
I think I'm missing a washer π€¨
Kavik@MaxwellDemonic - looking at you here man :)
(meant to tag you in my original post, then forgot, then wasn't sure if it would alert you to the tag if it was added as an edit, so new message instead lol)
KavikDid you ever find out about the missing washer? Did anyone else take theirs apart and get back to you about it? Did you contact Kizer? Iβm sure they would send you some washers.
DougFLA123Lol i totally forgot about it since putting it back together
Hadn't considered contacting Kizer since disassembly voids the warranty anyway..... Except I never would've suspected it was missing pieces without disassembly, so......π
My guess is it's just overkill as a barrier between the steel washer and the titanium. But I suppose I could try reaching out to them to ask
KavikI bought this knife too, but havenβt taken it apart. I like the knife but it wasnβt razor sharp when I got it. It doesnβt really pass the slicing-through-paper-effortlessly-like-a-hot-knife-through-butter test. There are snags along the way and it kind of tears paper, doesnβt really slice paper like a razor...and since its a recurve blade π, it might be tough to get razor sharp.
DougFLA123Mine wasn't an amazing edge, but was okay.
There a discussion over in the Rhino drop with some examples of ways to handle a recurve. Google and YouTube wild help as well π
Short of something likea Sharpmaker, wet/dry paper on a contoured backer is probably easiest
DougFLA123Never did get a response from Kizer, just radio silence. Highly disappointed by that. Much more so than by a missing nylon washer.
Hard to feel good about supporting a company who doesn't respond to a customer about a missing piece on s $175 knife π¨π‘
Edit : ignore this, there were technical issues, email didn't go through. Will update after making another attempt
DougFLA123Well sunovabitch lol
I had to go look to answer your question, and in doing so I found an "undeliverable" reply to the email I sent. One of the contact emails listed on their site is no longer valid. (I did email instead of the web form so I could attach a pic)
I retract my previous statement, and will try the second email they list (and let them know about that)
DougFLA123Nothing bounced back this time, sent to kizer.cutlery@gmail.com
Seems service@kizercutlery.com is an invalid domain (not surprising, that's not their website domain, must've changed at some point)
KavikI probably would have gone with the first email address you tried too.
Thereβs also info@kizercutlery.com but who knows what kind of info that will yield or if it works.
DougFLA123Should be the same error, the details in the response sounded like it was related to the domain (kizercutlery.com), not the user (service)
Oddly enough, if you click the info@kizercutlery email link on their website it actually points you to mojave-outdoor@hotmail.com
They need to tighten up their web game lol
DougFLA123Late on my update, but I did get a response back from Kizer 2 days ago.
They confirmed that the purpose of the washer is just to reduce friction between the bearing race and the handle (though I still don't see why the race should ever move if the bearings are doing their job)
And they offered to send a replacement washer by China Post, said it should take me about a month to receive it π
KavikThe nylon washers almost seem like overkill...seems like oil would do the trick. I should take mine apart to see if mine was also built with only one nylon washer.
I once bought a Real Steel H6-S1 knife off of Amazon years ago and it didnβt come with the microfiber cleaning cloth that their knives usually come with, so I wrote to them and told them (they were very apologetic) and they said they would send me two cleaning cloths, but it would take a month because they were coming by boat from China. Sure enough, one month later, I received a package (it might have been an envelope) from them with two microfiber cleaning cloths in it. I thought that was pretty cool! That was back before I had 100 microfiber cleaning cloths! : )
KavikIβm really struggling to NOT buy the Massdrop x Laconico knife. Iβm starting to get the shakes! I think itβs been a whole week since Iβve bought a knife! π§
DougFLA123Yeah, i'm certain it's overkill too. And I know I can get the washer myself for a few cents.....but whatever, I'll let them send me one anyway lol
Haha I haven't bought one since the 7th!
I want the blade from the DogTooth, but don't love the handle.
I like the Laconico groove in all 3 colors.
And I still haven't gotten in on a Crux yet.
It's getting hard to keep holding out
DougFLA123I know, that's what everyone keeps telling me lol
And the quick shipping on it makes it even more tempting. It's the only one at the moment that has me really considering hitting the button
KavikI just looked at the MD x Brad Zinker Dogtooth for the first time (not sure how I missed it). It does look pretty cool. Very slim and light weight.
DougFLA123Ha, Ha, I thought it was just me haven the shakes when I don't have something to look forward to when my mailwomen comes......Life becomes a little EMPTY!
KavikThe Crux is the best one so far, they adore getting taken down for a cleaning too. Everything goes back together easily and afterwards the pivot is dreamy.
OmniseedI'll definitely be picking one of those up one of these days. Was going to do it this month, but that Raidops drop got to me instead, and figured the Crux will still be around to buy for a while
KavikI like the overall form of the Raidops, but the lock bar cutout looked really deep to me, so much that the titanium slab looked a little excessive.
The Crux does it for me so hard that I've got three of them and I'm still having a hard time keeping myself from selling a knife to get a blue one too.
OmniseedHmm, an interesting observation on the Raidops, will have to see how it looks/feels in regards to that in person.
The other deciding factor for me was that I've got a growing assortment of s35vn/ti already, but no m390 yet, and only a couple nice CF pieces. So a chance at those materials for less than the Crux I want was too much to pass on
KavikYeah that's a great case for the Raidops, plus the atypical but useful forward cant to the blade is awesome. I'm weird about lockbar cutouts sometimes, I just don't like seeing a thick titanium slab milled down to nothing.
DougFLA123I love my Gent, and your comment just helped me decide what to buy next (Crux). I was on the fence between buying this Kizer or the Crux, but I'm just going to get the Crux. To be honest, I don't LOVE the look of this Kizer but I also don't own a Kizer and thought it might be nice to add one to the stable. The part that was making it a hard decision was the material combo for the current price. $100-110 is crazy cheap to me for titanium and S35VN. On the bright side the Crux is in stock so I'll get it even sooner! :D
danhorntxI would take the Crux over just about any Kizer any day! I have several Kizer knives and I canβt quite put my finger on it but thereβs something about Kizer knives that I just donβt like. I order them, I think Iβm going to love them, I get them in the mail and theyβre kind of, βmehβ. The reason I bought a bunch of Kizer knives was because Massdrop was selling them at greater than 50 percent discount off the price they were being sold for at BladeHQ and KnifeCenter. Sometimes I just canβt resist a great bargain and thatβs where they get me. I wish I would have put all my Kizer money towards a Reate or a WE knife! : )
Getting back to the Crux, I love it, I got the Juggernaut Blue and it is such a great slate blue color. The action is great (flies open, drops closed), super sharp, perfect centering, etc! You wonβt regret it! I like it better than the Gent. I tend to like bigger knives anyway, and with its bigger flipper tab, there is less wear and tear on the tip of your flipper finger. I find the Gents little flipper tab hurts the tip of my flipper finger after a while.
DougFLA123Iβm so excited. It canβt get here soon enough. I ordered the juggernaut in bronze. I struggled trying to decide on Blue or bronze but Iβve got some blue knives and I donβt have any in bronze. I think itβll age really well.
I was was really impressed with the fit and finish of the gent, but I too find it a bit small for my every day needs. I like having a knife that size for certain occasions or clothing but I think the Crux will get more pocket time. Iβve been carrying an endura for far too long lol. Great knife though and Iβve put it through the ringer. These ferrum forge collabs with WE and MD are like a dream come true. I canβt wait to see what they do next.
danhorntxI know what you meant bud, was just making a (bad) joke π
The bronze age had a huge impact on the making of knives and daggers, and lead to the creation of swords and other vast improvements to edged weapons and tools, so it seemed appropriate lol
KavikLol it didnβt click I just realized that my wording was a little off. Iβve already started the work day and havenβt made my way to any coffee yet so forgive me for not putting 2 and 2 together!
KavikIs that a teflon washer? You might want to consider upgrading to metal washers. I had a few knives that had Teflon washers & wear out over the years. See if they have them at the Kizer HQ.
Trojanman79Did you read any of the words that accompanied that picture? Or even skim any of the conversation that followed it?
It's already been specifically discussed what the washer is and what it's there for.
Have another look and you'll answer your own question
Trojanman79I appreciate the idea that you were trying to be helpful, and I don't like being a dick about it.... But I didn't see a nicer way of pointing out that it already explained in the original post, right before the picture, that it has bearings on steel races (washers) with just the nylon as a spacer between the steel and the titanium
In other words, it's nothing to be worried about in this case, they shouldn't wear out in 100 years of daily use
DougFLA123Ended up getting in on that Kizer Sealion Fixed Blade drop the other day too. So it's not a flipper but looks like I'm adding a Kizer to the collection after all. Been looking for a nice small fixed blade. My KA-BARs and Bucks are too big and bulky for EDC.
danhorntxIβve been eyeballing the Kizer Degnan Guru Flipper (choice of flipper or thumb studs, holes or no holes). Itβs a sheepsfoot, but kind of looks like a wharncliffe. It looks like a bigger version of the CRKT Pilar. Itβs another Kizer that theyβve managed to just about cut the price in half on (it sells for around $180 just about everywhere)...tells you a little about the crazy markup on knives when they first come out. Iβm on the fence with it. I am getting a little tired of Kizerβs same olβ, same olβ bead blasted gray titanium handles, and their S35VN blades.
danhorntxESEE makes nice Linen and Canvas Micarta handles. The linen micarta handles looked cooler in the pictures, so thatβs what I bought at first, but having seen and held both now in person, I prefer the Canvas Micarta handles. Better feel and traction.
DougFLA123Yeah that is definitely on my list, although I've got folders ahead of fixed blades in priority. I've got a few others I want first. Just bought a Blurple PM2 in S110V earlier tonight got a heck of a deal so I'm pretty excited about that. It looks like MD is getting ready to do a Bradford drop. I'm probably going to be too weak to pass on that too.
danhorntxI started out collecting fixed blade knives because theyβre so cool and beastly looking. Once I started collecting folding knives and could flick them open and closed while I watched tv, my fixed blade buying slowed down a lot. Now, just about every knife I buy is a folder. I recently bought the burple PM2 in S110V. I like it a lot! I like getting knives with different steels. This is my first S110V steel blade!
DougFLA123 Nice this PM2 I just bought is my first S110V as well. I actually got it on knife swap subreddit. $130 shipped including An MXG deep conceal clip. Felt like it was a pretty great deal. I really like deep conceal clips.
danhorntxOf course I say that and then I just found they started a drop for it. I requested it a while back funny how it pops up on MD the day after I buy one.
danhorntxI think the PM2 pops up a lot on this sight because itβs always being requested. It is kind of funny though how it popped up shortly after you purchased yours. It sounds like your deal was much better than the deal you would have gotten here. I like the deep carry pocket clips too. All knives should come with deep carry pocket clips. It seems simple enough to do and looks better than regular pocket clips (I think).
DougFLA123Well I got my PM2 today. It looks brand new. So I got a bit of a discount especially considering the clip. I'm pretty happy about that. In other news the Kizer Sealion Drop was cancelled and they just refunded me my money. Dangit. $70 was such a good deal too.
DougFLA123Lol oh man, this was just too funny, had to share.
If anyone remembers, my Alter Ego was missing one nylon washer that sits between the metal bearing race and the handle.
I emailed Kizer and was told they'd send a replacement, would take about a month to arrive π
Fast forward 8 weeks, i get a missed delivery attempt notice in my mailbox (I was home, he never knocked, but that's a whole other issue), no idea what it is, wasn't expecting any deliveries and didn't recognize the tracking number.
So I waste my whole lunch today going to the post office to pick up this mystery package....
They finally got it and hand me a knife sized box from China, wtf?
On my way out to the car I recognize a Kizer model number on the box and finally remember I'm waiting for washers from 2 months ago! Cool lol
But..... Open the box to find........
search
New bearings and races, still no 5 cent washers after all that lmao
DougFLA123Lol I don't even care at this point, not waiting another 2 months for something that was overkill in the first place. I just found it too funny
And hey, spare bearings with grooved races ain't bad to have π
At least I didn't get a lockpick π
