I've been lurking around massdrop for a while, and this is my 1st time actually buying anything. It sounds like this is a pretty good deal and I think I'll like the VG-10 better than the 420HC on my Kershaw.
After using this for a few weeks now, I'm definitely happy with this knife. The VG10 stays sharp forever. I'm usually wearing nitrile dipped style work gloves, and the knife feels great in hand. I accidentally dropped this onto concrete from up on a 10 ft ladder. A little scuff on the scales, and that's it. Still opens and closes silky smooth. The shipping was over a week behind, but in my opinion, still worth it.
Does anybody have or had problems with customer service. I have been trying to contact them about this drop the last couple of days and they don’t respond . Most of these drops aren’t cheap and where I spend my money like that I expect prompt customer service not contact me when the hell they feel like it!
Sam127hear hear. I'm waiting on the green one. No updates yet. I want to field test this one on my hiking trip this weekend, and another one next weekend :(
Just got it today.
It's hefty. The only other Kizer Vanguard I have is the Gemini and it's a much more lightweight affair than the Intrepid. That's not by any means a bad thing. The additional weight on the blade gives a better action with the bearings.
I immediately opened it up to give it a full cleaning and found that it was damn near spotless inside. They used some kind of lightweight oil between the liners and the G10 scales (which was quickly replaced with frog lube). The pivot was completely clean of any kind of grease or real lubrication as were the bearings and bearing tracks. After giving the whole thing a once over, and relubricating with 10 weight Nano-oil, the action is pristine. It's not quite a heavenly drop-shutty affair, but it's very very smooth.
Overall I'm impressed with the design. Uniform screw size set to T8 for the pivot and the handle screws (seriously Kizer, do this every time and you'll have a fan for life). Ergonomically it has virtually no hot spots. The G10 texture is very grippy. On of the less impressive aspects, the liners are rather thick and only skeletonized on the show-side. This doesn't do much for balance, but it seems like something they could have done to reduce weight. The interior of the liner could use a bit of chamfering (even if only on where your thumb interacts with the lockbar).
I will say I was slightly annoyed at the "Made In China" sticker on the blade. There is no reason to do that, hell put it on the box rather than right on the side of my brand new blade.
Additionally if people want I can start posting some disassembly pics.
Well good to know there's a MD distribution facility. I'M only ~20 minutes from Baltimore. So when they do decide to finally ship, I won't be waiting to long.
Well dang. Now that I come to the discussion section. I see that I'm not the only one. I'm here to order, in the final half hour. And, as others have mentioned. The black version is all spoken for. 79 sold in total, at the time of my comment here.
Maybe next time?
Dang, no black/blue left. Why can't we get more of the cool colors than the plain Jane ones in these drops? :(
And the split between green & black versions isn't even a 50/50 split. Black is already sold out and only 59/130 people in drop. Seems odd.
