Designed by Hawaii native Scot Matsuoka, the Kizer Vanguard Ki4479 Kala is a production version of the utilitarian blade that made him famous. Slim yet stout enough to take on hard tactical and field use, the Kala measures nearly 9 inches long. The blade, made from high-carbon-content Japanese VG-10 stainless steel, is 3.7 inches in length for plenty of edge to slice, pierce, skin, and more. A stainless steel liner lock secures the blade, which can be deployed with a simple press on the flipper tab. Textured for grip, the G-10 handle is available in two different colors. The clip offers right-handed tip-up carry. Also notable is the Koloa Duck logo, which symbolizes Matsuoka’s connection with his hometown where the rare bird is indigenous to.
Scot Matsuoka’s first exposure to knifemaking came when he was just 9 years old in his hometown of Koloa on the garden island of Kauai. After finding a large nail on the ground he attempted to put an edge on it, and thus began a love for making knives. Luckily, later on in 1993, he met Hawaii-based Ken Onion, under whom he developed his skills and honed his craft. Years later Scot turned professional and has since had his work featured in shows around the world—he was even featured on the cover of Blade Magazine in 2006. One theme that runs throughout his work is the Koloa Duck logo, representative of the rare endangered bird from his place of birth.
