1. Does this fit so well that it doesn't need a waist belt? Even for running, back country skiing, etc? 2. Never had a Klymit before but the side compression strap system doesn't look that strong, at least not for extreme compression. Would probably have to supplement it with external straps, yeah? But that might distort the fit.

kbear@kbear - This pack has shoulder straps that are more like a harness, and is similar to most ultra running packs - very wide straps, dual sternum straps, and no waist belt. This really hugs the pack close to your pack while distributing the weight well. A waist belt is generally best for supporting weight, and is most effective with there is some kind of pack frame. Without a frame, a harness like this is an improvement over the traditional method. You can check out the Patagonia Fore Runner, or most packs/vests by Nathans or Ultimate Direction (which I'd love to see a poll for!)
The side compression straps are a nice size for what they do, and they are definitely not fragile! They are thicker than the thin cords used by some UL companies, and thinner than the over built standard webbing from mainstream companies. I wouldn't attach my backcountry skis to these unless it was an emergency, but certainly they will compress the pack well and you could secure a jacket, climbing skins, or the like to the outside.
