DannyMilksGood to know..... still a tough decision as I have a wide uper body. I usually don't need much padding though so this pad will be probably good enough. You're talking about the insulated version with the flat valves correct? I might wait for it then...

DannyMilksIs the green version insulated as well ? I am wondering what are the differences between this one and the green one. Thanks

dallasmaverickHe responded and said the green one was insulated as well. The green one has two one way valves, one for inflating and the other for deflating quickly. The green is 2 ounces lighter but 3 inches narrower. The green one is made of a slightly lighter material and has a sticky coating to help you not slide off.

Xendar77I want the extra 3 inch width on this one but the non slip lower surface from the other one... Torn between which one to go for.. definitely don't want the 26 inch wide green one because it adds to the weight... So it's between those one or the regular sized green one.... Difficult choice.

dallasmaverickYou can add your own non slip surface by painting on silicone diluted with mineral turpentine. So I'd go for this one perhaps. You're only missing out on the different valve and colour after you've added your own anti slip surface.

HubeyDoobyDooI just watched your video for the green sleeping pad from earlier this year and the extended version where you go in detail. Thank you for the awesome details you provided. I'm thinking about going for the long and wide newer green pad with two valves ( I think that's the one dropping in a few days ??) . I'm 6 ft tall and have wide shoulders.... And I move a lot while sleeping...

HubeyDoobyDooThe reason I'm thinking about the long and wide green pad is how it looked when you were lying on it in the detailed video. Like you mentioned in that video, it'll probably be psychological thing for me that the pad isn't wide enough and it'll keep me awake... Haha...

dallasmaverickHey thank you and you're welcome. I'm glad the videos were helpful to you. I need to do a follow up on the 20" wide pad. That video was a first impression video and I hadn't spent a whole night on it yet. Since then I found 20" to be too narrow for me to sleep on, as someone that rolls over a few times a night. I too am going to get the newer Massdrop Ultralight V (yes, dropping in a few days :-) ) in the Long wide model. At 26" wide I'll be very happy. I think I'll end up shortening it to 3/4 length for some weight savings and use 3mm foam under my legs. For reference I have an old 23" wide Klymit pad and that is several times better than 20" wide, but perhaps not as good a sleep as 26" wide. I'm a bit anxious so if I think I'm going to roll off in the middle of the night, my sleep wont be as deep. So it's nice to have that extra just in case room even if it's not physically used. Also keeps your sleeping bag/quilt sides of the cold ground. And as an added feature, wraps your shoulders with insulation if you do use it in a hammock. You got me thinking about performing comparison tests now.

HubeyDoobyDooI do not have any of these items. I'm actually new to both massdrop and backpacking. I've done car camping and day hikes plenty of times to know that I want to get into backpacking. I can remember only 1 long backpacking trip I did , maybe about 13-15 years ago. I'm building my gear slowly, will use them on my car camping trips and eventually move onto longer multi day hikes when I have my gear sorted out.
Looking forward to your newer comparison videos. And just like you, I move around quite a bit as well and that's why going for the long and wide model for the green one.
Thank you for the insights . It helps newbies like me a lot.

dallasmaverickAhh well welcome to both Massdrop and back to backpacking. Nice to have you. The upcoming long wide model will be the most comfortable to sleep on, the main reason to consider other sizes is weight and a bit of cost savings. For car camping it will be pretty excellent and when you start backpacking you may consider shortening it to save weight and pack size. In its price and weight range the Klymit pads are probably most comfortable. When you jump up in price for other brands you get slightly lighter pads and a few centimetres or an inch or so of extra thickness and support in the pad. For some that extra thickness is needed for side sleeping or maybe to support their bodyweight. Thickness is less important for back sleeping as pressure points are more spread out.
So far I've had 6 sleeping pads and none I'm truly happy with yet. It's hard to know how something will perform for you until you try it for yourself. And it helps having a bit of understanding of the science of what's needed for what circumstances. In the absence of understanding the science beforehand, not sleeping at night while camping because you're freezing or uncomfortable will quickly tell you your system needs some changes. I've learned the slow and long way like that. 😝
I decided to make videos to help people get closer to getting the right gear the first time around. And on a budget if possible.
