loveofthedarkLarge blankets I can see, two at a time always stuck me as a lot more work and juggling than just knitting 2 separately. Its impressive, but seems like a lot more work and bulkier bits to fiddle with vs being able to set one down. Am I missing something?

metisYes, you are, but thats ok! Some people really like working with a 40 inch circ, and doing 2 at a time helps people like me, who tend to get second sock syndrome. :) It's ok, it's not for everyone. You asked what in the world we would want with a needle that long, and I told you. :)

loveofthedarkwhy not just start the second sock at the same time on a second needle and swap back and forth the same way? if it works well for you, that's an awesome way to keep yourself on track.

metisThat certainly works well for some people. for some of us, having it all on one needle makes everything go much more smoothly. I'm very good at yarn management, so 2 balls at a time doesn't bother me the way doing one at a time, of having 2 whole needles to fiddle with would.

metisYou can knit flat on circulars too... blankets, shawls, or scarves knitted longways for instance. I knit pretty much everything on circulars, whether or not it’s in the round. Or a colorwork baby blanket with steeks could be knit in the round on a 40” I guess.

metisI sometimes improvise on my socks, to make them longer or use a different heel, and if I do them two at a time, I don't have to remember or read later--I just do the same thing, twice in a row.

metisThe shawl I'm making right now began with 351 stitches cast on. The pattern recommended an 80" needle (!!!!) but I went with 47". Projects like this, or things like blankets, are much easier if you use super long cables.

metisFor me, I live in a very busy house, with a lot going on all the time. Keeping track of 2 separate needles would just be too much trouble, when having everything on one needle is so much easier for me.
