Product Description
An excellent introduction to the world of fountain pens, this gift set comes with everything you need to start writing right out of the box. At its heart is your choice of two of the most popular entry-level pens on the market: the Lamy Safari or the Lamy Al-Star Read More
Folks new to fountain pens should be aware that the Safari and Al-Star are well-known as "love it or hate it" pens. The feed is triangular - the idea is that it forces you to hold the pen "correctly." (The feed is the part that you hold.) I find this irritating, but many like it. That said, it is a good sturdy starter pen, but the feed shape may not be to everyone's liking.
Well you have to consider the Al-Star pen is 27+8+5 for shipping so that's nearly $40 when you're done with mass drop (for the Al-Star) vs the Amazon is $36. If you have prime, free 2 day shipping. if you don't have prime, I think anything over $35 counts for free standard shipping.
postnickI didn't catch that you were talking about the Al-Star. For that, you're correct, but only for the blue. The purple Al-Star is over $50, and the red makrolon is $40. So, yes, a blue Al-star is cheaper.
krhannon7333I see in the description of the drop, it is a medium nib. It was not repeated in the bullet list of what is included in the drop, and agree that may have been helpful to us all. I would have jumped on this if it was an EF nib.
EF nibs are no longer being offered in NA by Lamy steel nib FP's. And the Z24 I believe is being sunset in favour of the Z28 converter (a redesign of the Z24). So any products that you see featuring either from NA sources, are bound to be the tail end of current stock (I didn't say old stock) as per Lamy's recent news on the availability of EF nibs around the world. If you want EF steel on Lamy's, then buy from EMEA or Asia, where they will make EF's available. Read about it here: http://blog.gouletpens.com/2017/05/lamy-extra-fine-nib-availability-z28.html
I wish that there were more pen color options. This drop has a rather limited selection of pen colors; for those of us with larger pen collections, we have nearly all the usual color of pen bodies. It would be nice to see more pen body color options. I love the purple and the blue especially. The red is ok, but I don't have a white so if I join this drop, that is probably the one I will have to choose. Maybe I can Duracoat the white pen body to some other color.
IvanSpendalotI know that Amazon has them; my point was that I wish MD offered more colors, perhaps at a better price point. Hard to beat Amazon's selection and pricing, especially since I live 30 minutes away from Amazon HQ.
