Rest assured that we we will provide you all with updated information regarding the status of your order throughout the process. You can expect an update from us by the end of the day Pacific Time on 7/8.
What is the diameter of the pen?
Thanks for asking, the diameters are: Cap 0.6 in (1.4 cm), barrel 0.5 (1.2 cm), grip 0.3 in (0.8 cm).
I've added those to the description as well.
I committed - too bad it didn't go through.
Really sad to see this drop fail. Hopefully it will be brought back at a time when there are less competitive pens on Massdrop!
Hey @Lonelyers -- 1st on the drop! I'm glad you saw that this came back again so quickly.
Jim Lanier has been very interested in the Massdrop community. We're currently running a drop for some Lanier upright pen stands that were the most popular choice in a poll, so Jim offered to make the Classic Elite available again with lower drop quantities to help make it successful.
Hopefully @SchwudyFoodie and a few others who were on board last time can re-join as well!
I have pens made with the JoWo nibs--medium. I see them offered in ranges from $140-$155 depending on the material, from local artisans (I think that is what they call themselves--if not no offense intended!) I own 4 and have given 1 as a gift. Bought the first one about 10 years ago and still use it frequently.
I'm joining the drop, but keep reading if you are interested in my experience. I do not know this company--I'm just speaking to the nib. But to the person dissing this company because it is made from a kit, I respectfully submit that the person using the kits are enormously important to the outcome. If you believe you can buy the beginnings and produce a thing of beauty without meaningful effort in selecting the materials, the specific parts of the material, and completing the work; I wonder if you might have a more optimistic assessment of your "eye" than what others of us would see.
The beauty really is dependent on the eye of the maker, they vary. I've purchased from 3 different artists. The quality of the turning seems the same, the quality of what is used as the sealer to protect the wood or create the shine seems to vary by maker.
The good: It is cool to be able to match the threads to make any design match up when it is closed. It isn't cool that when capped it doesn't have a firm start and stop place-- it comes loose (not off, just loose) sometimes when I carry it in my handbag (in a protected pocket but still jostled as my arm swings or I reach into the bag for other things). Not a big issue, I just make sure it isn't one of the pens I grab for my handbag when I'm going someplace.
3 our of the 5 pens wrote beautifully immediately and still do. I have a light pressure on paper and they have still open a bit after time to a thicker line than right out of the box-- but I would call them a true medium. The flow is not wet nibs but not dry either. I write a lot, and have enjoyed these pens with several brands and colors of ink. There is difference in flow from ink to ink, but not a lot, and they have handled all of them beautifully.
2 of the five are a challenge--(REMEMBER ONLY TALKING ABOUT THE JoWo NIBS) --they don't flow but for a few words at a time and then I have to shake them or suck on them to get them going again. I've flushed with water and with the pen flush that is available (and worked well with some really old gunked up pens I got at a garage sale), and I've soaked. I've also looked at the nibs through my loop -- thinking if it was something obvious about just being misaligned I could fix it. But they look fine--so if I tried to fine-tune them, I would probably wreck them. I've done these things many times--I'm one of those fools who expect a different outcome by trying the same thing again. Someday if I ever get to a pen show or run into somebody who repairs fountain pens I'm going to have them look at the nibs for me or maybe replace them.
I also own some of the high end pens with the special nibs and there are some differences in writing with them and the "regular" nibs. Some of them are indeed a joy, others less noticeable of a difference. Even the best ones are not enough so as to prevent me from enjoying writing with all of my pens (except the 2 aforementioned--but I have hope for them). The comment somebody made below about the buyer just needs to know that it is the barrel and cap that is special and the writing tool itself is more of an ordinary pen. Which is great for me.
I'm committing to join at the 99.99--although it doesn't look very hopeful! I like that the company says they rigorously test each pen. I hope that means they write a significant amount before they pass it.
I assume that somebody in this group has experience with the company or it wouldn't be on the drop. If I knew more about that I might go for the current rate of $124.99--but since I don't I'm staying conservative for the $100. The amount of testing mine received was at point of purchase and then just a phrase or two.
Now what color? They all look pretty. Anybody seen then in real life and can describe them the colors in more detail?
Less than a day left for this drop, and the lowest price has not yet been reached. Will Massdrop please extend this one for a few days as well? It would be a disappointment if this drop is unsuccessful.
Does it railroad that much, or was the pen being dipped for the writing example in the picture?
Nevermind - my bad. $99.00 is a great price. The best their website will do is $118.00. Good job. Why is the color in the main picture, not available? That's the one I want. The yellow color choice doesn't match the color in the bigger picture. I think that is pale yellow or something like that. I was ready to commit. Please advise.

No worries, your perspective is valid and welcome! I'm glad you're pleased with the offering.
I missed this first comment about color and have replied to that separately.
Yes, that is helpful. Pulling the trigger shortly.
Do not get this. The same exact thing can be ordered online for $13.
Now that was helpful. Do tell, where online is it $13.00? Just so you all know, I gave myself a thumbs up. Why am I able to do that?
Hey @grantslone, I agree with @SchwudyFoodie -- could you please post a link?
The quality of materials, skill of craftsmanship, and time spent making these by hand would make that price nearly impossible - unless the seller is taking a loss on the sale, which could be.
While we certainly appreciate members expressing views and opinions here, you will find that the community most values advice that has been substantiated with verifiable facts and/or personal experiences.
Seriously these are made from kits they sell at woodcraft.

I'm pretty sure they were referring to the fact that it is built on a kit pen. They don't really appear to be hiding that so long as you know what a JoWo nib is, but it's worth being aware that the pen itself is nothing special aside from the wood on the barrel.
Yes, to me, it is the barrel that draws my attention. I don't really have the opportunity to try out the pen in person, so I can only rely on the reviews available. And it seems the nib's performance is acceptable.
::nvm, deleted::
Does this drop come with a converter?
Hey @Lonelyers, thanks for asking!
The Classic Elite does not come with a converter, but I did just speak with the vendor and we've added the option. You can now add an international standard converter at check-out (+ $5).
We all waited kind of a long time for this drop to ship, and so it was frustrating when my very securely packaged pen arrive with a broken cap (the break was between the part with the threads and the yellow part, where the commenter above has the epoxy issue).
Massdrop support was very helpful (and prompt). They were in touch with the manufacturer, who shipped out a new pen and a return label for the broken one. The new package also took a while to arrive, but they included an additional few ink cartridges (different colors) and a converter. The manufacturer definitely made it right, and I'd do business with them again.
Massdrop, as always, great customer service.
Thanks for posting about your experience, your patience and understanding are appreciated!
Mostly, I'm glad that we could help you to get exactly what you ordered in perfect condition.
Thanks also for posting the writing sample, we'd love to see more of these in discussions.
Mine arrived today, beautiful.

Anyone has this flaw, I just noticed it, it seems like glue (epoxy) because it's super hard and I can't scrape it off the pen.

thanks for updates. I'm happy to wait.
Still no confirmation from the vendor in regards to tracking info for the outbound orders. I will be trying daily until I hear back from them, but I understand the group's frustration in regards to the reoccurring delays for this drop. If you would like to cancel your order please submit a ticket via and our Customer Service Team will issue quick and prompt refunds.
For those of you interested in waiting I will be updating the group very regularly until these arrive at our warehouse.
Again apologies for the delay and rest assured that I will be working my hardest to get these in for you ASAP.
Expect an update from us on 3/2 or sooner if something comes up.
I received this today, But Color is dark and unclear than Photo and I had ordered 2 pcs but I received 1pcs. I'm very disappointment.
Well worth the wait!
My pen arrived this morning. It's absolutely beautiful. Also super packaging.
That's good to hear @MtioJay, thanks for posting . Most items are shipped from our warehouse, but Lanier ships these direct so it's good to know they are well-packed. How does it write?
I talked to our representative today and expressed my frustration on behalf of the group in regards to the long fulfillment time for this drop. The rep is still waiting on confirm from her warehouse, but she did confirm that orders did ship out this weekend. I am currently waiting on a list of names and will update tracking accordingly.
If I don't receive confirmation tomorrow from her, I will let Massdrop Customer Support know to cancel orders for those of you who would prefer a refund rather than waiting.
I will be talking to her tomorrow and update the group as soon as I can.
Thanks for your continued patience and expect an update from us on 2/25 or sooner if something comes up.
FYI, my pen just arrived today! Looks great!
Another update for you all. I talked to the vendor earlier today and our representative let us know she was pushing for these to ship out today. I still haven't heard back yet, but I will be sending another email today requesting for updated status and confirmation. As soon as I hear back from her I will update you all with where we are at with this order.
Thanks for your patience and expect an update from us on 2/23 or sooner if something comes up.
Dang and I thought joining the drop sooner would help me get it faster. Guess not.
