I've commented on this before. I own one of these sharpeners. It's not a Lansky but it's almost identical. The photo demonstrating how to use it wrong. I know that's what the instructions tell you to do, but sharpening that way is just as stupid and awkward as it looks in the photo.
Instead, hold the sharpening stone in your non-dominant hand and grip the handle of your blade in your dominant hand, then sharpen the blade with a cutting motion down the stone just like you would if you were sharpening it freehand. The angle guide will still keep the blade at the correct angle relative to the stone, but it's a much more natural (hence, safer) way to sharper the blade. It also feels a lot better and you can work faster and more smoothly.
Most people who buy these and don't like them are trying to follow the directions and hold it in the awkward way you see pictured. Don't do that. The instructions are wrong.

SitwonWhat's "natural" is completely up to whoever is doing it. To say that the picture is wrong is also incorrect. It's the same as what you described just moving a different part. The stone is still at the same angle as you said and the stroke direction can still be the same, therefore close enough results on 99% of the knives that people will actually sharpen with this set.

Drallen27Holding the far end of the angle guide and moving the stone is not mechanically the same as what I describe. Sure, it'll achieve a similar result, any way you grind you'll get the same angle. But in my experience doing it that way is much slower, and gives you much less control of the blade (notably the edge) than griping the handle (what it was designed for). Anything that gives you less control of the dangerous part puts you at greater risk and is less safe.
If it doesn't feel natural to hold a knife by its handle, then why are you sharpening it?
