Enlist as a Solderer

You may be intimidated by soldering, but you’re interested in exploring the world of tinkering that only a proper soldering kit can open up. The communities over at Geekhack and Geekhackers have been helping people learn the process for years and the culmination of their efforts is the Learn to Solder Kit, a comprehensive set of supplies designed and arranged by Ming Kawaguchi (mkawa on Geekhack) to be a purely pro-bono tool for education. Check out this thread on Geekhack where people who have used this kit to get started with electronics. There are plenty of other kits with low quality tools available for lower prices, but as any experienced soldering enthusiast will tell you, it's generally worth it to start with a set of tools that are built to last.

Note: This is a 110V soldering iron and only 100 kits are available for this drop.

Follow My Lead

While many soldering irons comes with temperature control to cater to a range of solders, this set is designed to work optimally with leaded solder. The Edsyn CL1481 soldering iron hits a mean usage temperature of 350º C- the perfect temperature for leaded material- thanks to its beefy heater and controlling the contact between the tip and the heater. While this means you can’t use unleaded solder, that material can be a pain to work with and the kit includes enough leaded solder to keep you going for a year’s worth of projects.

Always Leave a Tip

Family owned and operated for over 60 years, Edsyn is one of only two companies left in the United States that actually makes their soldering tools in the USA. Instead of sourcing the cheapest parts they can find from overseas, Edsyn uses the best parts available, often locally, for final assembly in their California production facility. As the soldering iron is built to be modular, every tip used by the CL1481 soldering iron can also be used in higher-powered, calibrated, and variable temperature models. Every Edsyn soldering tip is designed and manufactured to last more than 1000 production hours without showing significant wear. Not only are these high quality tips built to last, but they are fully compatible to let you expand your toolbox without starting from scratch.

Steel Larsen

While most wire cutters are made of soft, stamped steel sheet, the Larsen Snippers are made of hardened steel and precision ground. With no abuse, they should hold a sharp edge for about a decade, but even if you get a little rough with them, they can be easily sharpened like any good knife. The Larsen brand no longer labels their tools, but they look suspiciously similar to Lindstrom’s current line, which is widely considered the top shelf of hand tools.

Correct Yourself

If you make a mistake during the process, the best way to correct yourself is to desolder the bad joint and try again. Still the best hobbyist desoldering tool 30 years after its invention, the Edsyn Soldapullt is a big piston that unleashes a whirlwind of mechanical suction with a simple push of a plunger and press of a button. The DS017LS Soldapullt is made from ESD-safe ABS plastic with an easy-to-replace DuPont high-temperature Teflon Tip.
