Why does the shipping of a coin to Germany costs more than the coin (13,00$)?

dealdaWhen Massdrop ship items overseas, costs seem to be very reasonable, but when they hand shipping over to the vendor, the vendor often seems to use it as a way of gouging back any savings given in the first place. Either that or they just can't be bothered with overseas shipping.

AotearoanHi there. I am the vendor for this product and we had no input in the process for choosing shipping costs. We have shipped plenty of Coin Tops overseas, and it is costly. To double check, I just put in a sample order in our discounted shipping platform and a 3oz package shipped to Germany is $13.58. That is the cheapest option between USPS and DHL. So we would actually be losing a little money on shipping cost, especially once you factor in the cost for packing supplies.

leatherworksusaOK, all very random then - personal experience from recent purchases:
Spyderco Paramilitary 2 Pocket knife, Massdrop shipping price to New Zealand: $6.25
Kershaw Fatback Pocket Knife, Massdrop shipping price to New Zealand: $5.75
Klymit Pillow, Massdrop shipping price to New Zealand: $5.50
All via DHL as far as I am aware and all substantially heavier/ larger packages than I envisage a tiny US coin would require - but obviously I am mistaken, given that your spin coin will cost me $12.75 to ship to NewZealand.

AotearoanThose are great rates! I honestly don't know how Massdrop can ship at that rate. I can try to look into it tomorrow.

tommydadogHi there, both are still on the way at the moment, but I have imported a lot of knives into NZ with no problem. You just have to avoid spear points (double edge blade) and automatics (button operated) which are banned.
The Kershaw Fatback is an assisted opener, which is officially allowed by customs, so hopefully it will turn up without any hassle. - I got a SOG Twitch (assisted opening) from the US last year with no issues.

AotearoanIt's an odd system. I sent a box under a pound to DE, $75. Sent a half pound box, $15.
These are two examples of many prices being variable from my experience. Sizes varied but where never oversized. I can't explain it. Can you?

AotearoanActually, at this size and weight I think its cheaper to ship the knife. Mainly because of how inconvenient a package like this is. Even with a box, the package is extremely small, and so that's basically just the fee for the amount of padding ...I'm stupid and forgot the name. Wow. Anyhow, the amount of padding they'd put in so that the actual package being delivered is snugly packaged. And I've said package like 3 times too many. Ooh boy.

leatherworksusaIt's costly to ship a coin overseas? It isn't ITAR, nor is it prohibited goods, it isn't lithium or other hazmat, so what makes it expensive?
