Adding/Including Memories
I lost my dad last year (2023) and have been finding ways to include keepsakes/memories in my workstation. I've dabbled here and there with doing small woodworking projects and attempted a wrist rest from a piece of oak I picked up with him from my great uncles wood shop. I milled it to fit a 60% keyboard as I hadn't decided what keyboard I would be using it on and thought that's where most of my wrist would be in contact even typing on a full keyboard. I gave it a torched/burn appearance as I really was lost in what to do. I found an old shell casing from going hunting with my dad in my hunting pack and decided to imbed it into the end of the wrist rest so it would just have a little difference and a small story behind it as well. I have other things around my workstation from family and friends, but it just feels a little more special having worked on it and adding something small that has a memory for me to it. (Purple was my grandmothers favorite color and I have kinda now...

Let's not forget 1440p as of right now can't run 144hz due to DP limitations only 120 hz.
Running 1080p with AA and max graphics is the go to. Maybe volta will change that but I still think we got another 2 gens to go. I think this is the best format as of right now. Hate to say it but it is.
I'm not disputing the cost of gsync though its a bit crazy, but it is what it is for all gsync monitors.
FWIW, I have the Viotek 32" 1440p from the first drop last Nov. running on a Vega 64 and it runs 144hz perfectly over DP. For games that go out of the range, I see tearing of course, but your right most AAA titles stay well below 144.
And i should of pointed out 3440x1440 not just 1440p. I think the viotek runs 2560x1440 wich is totally capable of 144hz. Right now the best 3440x1440 is 100hz and i think possibly one thats overclocked to 120hz.
That monitor you have is a nice one. to bad it doesnt have gsync. Their only gsync model is 100hz 34".
I think LG put something out they were releases a 3440x1440 monitor this year with the new DP 1.5 standard that will push 144hz gsync/freesync. First of its kind. We'll see if LG can deliver. Either way, unless volta has some massive horsepower gains, its not going to be enough. i still think were 2-3 generations out before making it worth while if the pc is strictly for gaming.
Also most these panels are VA which i think is what LG said they are putting out. I'm not a VA guy, strictly IPS. Heres hoping an IPS one comes around as well, and volta tests well on them.
Honestly i think i'll stick with 2560x1440p or 2560x1080p for my next monitor purchase after i purchase a top of the line volta card on release. Whats really dissapointing here is MD price on this. Had it been listed for about 500 USD i'd be all in.
Incorrect. DP 1.4 can hit 4k @ 120hz. It can go higher for 1440p. We already have 3440x1440 displays with 200hz support (mind you, they are VA panels, so anything over 120hz has horrid ghosting). But hey, the technology does exist.
While these monitors are not yet out, my point was to highlight that you were mistaken in saying that 3440x1440 greater than 120hz cannot be supported via DP 1.4. We know that it can go up to at least 200hz at that resolution, with 10-bit and HDR support. It can also do 4k/120hz with 10-bit and HDR support (or 144hz with compression).

> We've talked in the past about the new 34" ultrawide IPS panel from LG.Display which will offer a high refresh rate of 144Hz while maintaining the high 3440 x 1440 resolution. This has apparently now gone in to mass production as of September so we wouldn't be surprised to see some displays announced in the near future featuring this panel, probably not for release before the new year though we wouldn't expect. This module supports G-sync incidentally according to the LG.Display specs. Later next year there are plans to develop this panel category to also support G-sync HDR which is likely to involve a multi-zone (probably 512) full-array local dimming backlight along with the necessary specs to offer optimal HDR performance, including that boosted DCI-P3 colour space. That isn't planned for production until Q2 2018 though.
TFTCentral is being optimistic. LG started producing their 3440x1440 100hz panels over a year ago (not to be confused with the 60hz panels that support up to a 100hz OC). The only panel using it is the AW3418DW (came out late 2017) with the LG 34GK950G also using it (slated for mid to late 2018 release). I would say holiday 2018 is the earliest we'll see a 3440x1440 144hz IPS panel. More likely early 2019.
But it is coming.
