I want to buy an ultrawide monitor but the advantages of dual screen is too hard to give up. As a workaround, I would like to use the ultrawide in side-by-side (or 2560x1440 + 880x1440 if possible) PIP mode and have both video input come from the same desktop. Would this approach get the result I want and would Window recognize this setup as two monitors?

PSA before purchase - LG's 3440x1440 displays do NOT support 2560x1440 resolutions out of the box for letterboxed 16:9 content. They are limited to 1920x1080 for this content. You will need Custom Resolution Utility (CRU), or a similar program/app to force this resolution.

Thanks for your response Medion. Very insightful. It's interesting that none of these have even approached 120Hz. Not that I'm doing anything at 120fps, but still even 90 seems difficult.
One last question, you said the Acer "cannot do 2560x1440 for legacy content out of box (you can fix this with CRU)." What did you mean by that?

Ok, let's take your standard 1920x1080 monitor. If you play an old game at 640x480, you can run this in a window, or full-screen. Most 1920x1080 monitors will support 640x480, but you will have black bars (letter boxing) on the sides.
Now, a 3440x1440 monitor should be able to do 2560x1440 full-screen but with letterboxing on the sides. The LG cannot (I've verified in person), and the Acer supposedly cannot (haven't used, trusting those who did) either. So if you get a game that doesn't support Ultrawide and you need to run 16:9 with letterboxing, you can't run 2560x1440 on the Acer/LG, only the Samsung. On the Acer/LG, you're limited to 1920x1080.
