PSA before purchase - LG's 3440x1440 displays do NOT support 2560x1440 resolutions out of the box for letterboxed 16:9 content. They are limited to 1920x1080 for this content. You will need Custom Resolution Utility (CRU), or a similar program/app to force this resolution.

MedionWhere would you find the CRU? Can you expand on that?

MedionWhy would 16x9 content appear different at either resolution? At 3440x1440 16x19 content renders to the top and bottom edge so you have black bars on either side. When the monitor runs a resolution that is not 64x27 (and not being stretched to fit) the empty space is filled grey. Based on personal preference I'd rather have black bars than grey when watching a movie.

CaptainProtonIf you load a game that doesn't support 21:9, you have to select from available 16:9 resolutions (and any other aspect that it supports). Out of box 2560x1440 is not supported, so you're limited to 1920x1080, which stretches (scales) and letterboxes. This is not ideal

MedionOh, I follow now. You're correct. I guess I haven't run into that situation yet.
MedionDoes this only affect games or media as well?

mynameisnotrickIf a game doesn't support 21:9, the max selectable resolution will be 1920x1080 rather than the expected 2560x1440.

MedionCan you recommend another decent widescreen freesync monitor?

KingWavyNot really. The technology here is a bit premature. I personally wouldn't be happy with any of the options.
Acer - They have a few 34" 3440x1440 option available. They have the best FreeSync range (30-75hz and 35-75hz, supporting LFC in both cases). They lack good out of box calibration, and they also cannot do 2560x1440 for legacy content out of box (you can fix this with CRU).
LG - Their options have narrow FreeSync ranges (55-75hz) and lack 2560x1440 support. While you can fix this with CRU, my experience wasn't a good one. I had the 34UC98-W for two weeks. I couldn't extend the FreeSync range below 55hz without flickering issues. When using CRU to force 2560x1440, anything over 60hz had frame skipping. This means 2560x1440 with a FreeSync range of 55-60hz, which is laughable. But of the 3 options, LG has the best out of box calibration and overall image quality.
Samsung - C34F791, and I owned this for a week before returning it. Advertised as 48-100hz FreeSync range with LFC, that was a lie. It's 80-100hz out of box with an option to expand to 48-100 w/LFC. The manual cautions that this "may" lead to "some" flickering. Yea, it was crazy and I had to disable it. On the plus side, image quality was overall great, at 100hz it was the highest refresh rate option in this segment, and it supported 2560x1440 out of the box for legacy content.
All of these options have their flaws. I liked the UltraWide experience, but I'm going to sit this out and wait for another product generation or two before diving back in.

MedionThanks for your response Medion. Very insightful. It's interesting that none of these have even approached 120Hz. Not that I'm doing anything at 120fps, but still even 90 seems difficult.
One last question, you said the Acer "cannot do 2560x1440 for legacy content out of box (you can fix this with CRU)." What did you mean by that?

Ok, let's take your standard 1920x1080 monitor. If you play an old game at 640x480, you can run this in a window, or full-screen. Most 1920x1080 monitors will support 640x480, but you will have black bars (letter boxing) on the sides.
Now, a 3440x1440 monitor should be able to do 2560x1440 full-screen but with letterboxing on the sides. The LG cannot (I've verified in person), and the Acer supposedly cannot (haven't used, trusting those who did) either. So if you get a game that doesn't support Ultrawide and you need to run 16:9 with letterboxing, you can't run 2560x1440 on the Acer/LG, only the Samsung. On the Acer/LG, you're limited to 1920x1080.
