if you like black bars either side of your game get this monitor. If you like screen tearing in SLi mode get this monitor. If you like having to tweak most games for them to display get this monitor. If you don't like those things skip WQHD and just wait for 4k.

pwnageI only encountered one game that I had to run with black bars on the side, and it wasn't a AAA title or anything so it wouldn't be a big deal to most people. So I think your first statement is a bit misleading. Most newer games support 3440x1440 natively and most older games can be made to work by editing an .ini file or via other workarounds found on WSGF.
Now, with that being said, I enjoyed my 34UM94 that I got from Massdrop but since then I've owned 40" and 48" 4K monitors and I would never consider going back to WQHD.

LateralusWhich 40" 4k did you get that you liked better? Are they in a similar price range? I've been looking but the ones in that size I've seen seem to have significant compromises like slower refresh rates or a quantized color gamut when run in as 4k instead of 1080P. I'm hoping to find a 40" 4K with 60Hz and good enough color for occasional photo work.

YoMamaSoFatCareful getting a 4k monitor that cheap. It's likely a TN panel, which won't look as good. This display uses an IPS panel which is much higher quality for both color accuracy and viewing angles.

ZyxtomaticNah, there are IPS 40"+ 4k screens made for Korean market by small manufacturers like Crossover or Wasabi using slightly lower grade LG panels (lower compared to big int'l manufacturers like LG itself).

YoMamaSoFatInitially I got the Samsung UN40JU6700 which is from their 2015 4K TV line. It has full 4:4:4 chroma subsampling, so colors and text are perfectly sharp just like a dedicated PC monitor (many TVs do not do this so it's important to research). It has a VA panel which characteristically have higher contrast ratios than IPS/TN panels and the blacks are very black (vs. the "gray" blacks typically present on an IPS panel) which is important for movies and dark games. It also does not suffer from IPS glow that just about every large IPS monitor has (this LG included). TVs have traditionally had high input lag but the 2015 Samsungs have done very well in that regard (there are HUGE threads on HardForum and Overclock.net with more info if you want to read more about them; no need to take up tons of space here).
Price was comparable at the time; the flat 40" version was $829 and the curved 40" version was $949. I believe both models have received price drops since then, but at the time they were in the same range or cheaper than most 34" ultrawides. The $699 price for this LG is fair, but keep in mind it's not curved if that interests you.
There are also the Korean 40", 42", etc. models that Anzial mentioned, along with the Philips BDM4065UC which is a little more well known. Most of the Korean displays use IPS panels, like he said, while the Philips uses a VA panel. Each panel type has its pros and cons, which I went into a little earlier. I'm not aware of any large 4K monitor using a TN panel like Zyxtomatic mentioned, but if there was one I'd avoid it.
edit: I should point out that the Samsung TVs only have HDMI 2.0 inputs, not DisplayPort, so your GPU needs to have an HDMI 2.0 output in order to fully support 4:4:4 chroma at 60 Hz. At this time, the only GPUs that I'm aware of that do so are the nVidia GTX 9xx series and the Titan X. If you need DisplayPort capability, the Philips or one of the Korean (Crossover, Wasabi Mango) large 4K displays are your only options at this time.

LateralusI purchase this monitor before and returned it. It made a periodic (~15-20 sec) popping sound, which was not fixed even when LG replaced it's motherboard. After reading the internet, a lot of people have been complaining about this since the first hardware revision, and it hadn't been fixed with the model I got (about 4 months ago). I also took the course that @Lateralus took, and bought a 4K Samsung TV. Its a UN48JS9000, which is way more expensive, but well worth the investment. I do miss my 144hz panel when playing FPS games, but even for semi-competitive gaming the 4K will do just fine.

BBFz0rI've been using one (well, with the silver back) for over a year now, no popping sounds. DP issue is annoying though (doesn't go to sleep properly)

BBFz0rHello fellow UN48JS9000 owner. :) Best display I've ever used.
Did you try disabling DP 1.2 on your LG monitor? I read that running at DP 1.1 fixed the popping sounds for some people, but I never had that issue. I did have the frustrating sleep issue, though.

LateralusAll Ubisoft games are not optimized for WQHD and I did mention having to tweak it for other other games. You do see my point though right? A little more and you can have 4K which works with all games.
