As someone who's never played with high end audio gear, I want to get the HD6xx coming up. Is this a good pair with it?

TerritoriesThere's a post below about 12 weeks ago by "Lefcoj" and replied to by "AudioAlchemy" who has hooked up to the HD650'sand 800's (both 300 ohm) and appears at least satisfied with the results. There's an "answered" question over on the big e-com site that begins with "A" where someone with 600 ohm AKG K240 [Monitors] seems happy with how the LD drove those. Most likely, you will probably want to set the LD to high gain. YMMV.
At some point I will do this switch myself and see how my 600 ohm HD 414SL's sound. For the time being I'll be doing the burn-in with my 55 ohm AKG K240 Studio's and 32 ohm AKG K67's.
Good luck with what ever you decide.

TerritoriesWell, curiosity got a bit of me, so I plugged in my HD 414SL's into the LD with just the factory 3.5 gain setting. The LD has volume marked from 0 to 100; at the MAX volume level I prefer, here are the settings:
- AKG K240 Studio ~ somewhere between 20-30 - AKG K67 ~ 20 - Sennheiser HD 414SL ~ 60+
Given this, the LD 1+ will drive the 300 ohm HD6xx's even at 3.5 gain level (so gain level 7 will also work)--the first part of your battle. Now it is just a question of whether the HD6xx's will deliver to your ears what YOU are expecting out of, as you said, "...high end audio..." With what you are considering, $350 is the cost of entry for the HD6xx's, LD 1+, and new tubes to replace the factory 6j1's...not too bad given what it would cost if you purchase everything via the "usual suspects" of online sellers.
