This is my first tube amp so I'm not sure if this is user error, I got a bad amp, my setup around it sucks or I just don't "get it" when it comes to tube amps. First, I get a lot of crackling and popping if my headphone line moves while I'm listening. Second, the sound seems, I don't know I guess a little muddled or distant. What is a common setup around these things? I'm trying to drive it with just an iPhone or iPad and listening with Beats headphones which otherwise sound fine to me straight from the iPhone.

cat4everBurn in times...they suck...I just replaced original tube with a 1964 Seimens and bought a cheap pair of closed back cans....they sounded like i was dragging them from water. Gave them 50-60 hours to burn in and they opened up like spring flowers. Patience...my audiophile....patience. Cavalli CTH/Koss UR-20...Senns 6xx on order.

cat4everI did not do that...I just powered them on when I sat down in front of PC. Eventually after 3-4 days everything was smooth as silk. Plus the tubes can get really warm along with chassis. It will work itself out through normal use.
Cheers

cat4evertube amps are best with higher impedance headphones which the beats are not and why they play ok on just a phone. the cell phone also puts noise into the amp because of the poor shielding and setup of components. if you use your phone or tablet be sure to use a long enough cord to get it well away as in 3 foot or better away from it.

cat4everI think your Beats headphones just does not need an extra amp. Its impedance is low. iPhone can drive it pretty well. This tube amp will only make the sound worse. When I was using my HD800 headphone on this amp, the sound is good, but when I was using a low impedance earplug, the sound is just distorted. Low impedance earplug/headphones are just not compatible with this amp. And I think they do not need any extra amp at all.
