I own the following headphones: grado 225 'vintage', he 400i, akg k7xx, and am in the fostex thx00 purpleheart drop. Which, if any, of these headphones is a good pairing with the little dot mk iii? I would like to try out a tube amp. I already have the grace mx99 amp.

jimpx10I think the only phones you have that will pair nicely are the Grado's and the Fostex. This is an OTL amp, Output transformerless, I don't know exactly what that means but if you have a degree in electrical engineering you might be able to understand the explanation when you look it up. Practically, it means this amp pairs well with high impedance phones, Beyerdynamics 600Ohms, Sennheisers, etc. It doesn't like low impedence phones that like large amounts of voltage ie most planars like your HE 400's or my Audeze lcd-2's or oddly, the AKG's. They seem to behave like planars and like the higher voltages.

Boombasticthank you very much for your reply.
your reply pretty much sums up what I had heard/figured out, but your reply was very well articulated and clarified things for me. I think for now I will get to know my he400i and akg k7xx better as I await the fostex phones. I will await a headphone meetup where I can hopefully test out some tube amps and see if they are for me, and if they are then look for an amp.
