Well worth the price, once you pick it up and feel the quality you will be happy with your purchase. For something that will last a life-time, the price is a small amount to pay
Very satisfied with this satchel; I live on the east coast but was raised in the mountain west and the leather used here is reminiscent of the top-end leather used on the finest saddles you would see on show horses. The interior of the satchel is well designed and the size is perfect for laptop and related gear with room to spare (I often carry my lunch in bento boxes that fit nicely together with my laptop. I'm looking to get at least 15-20 years and hopefully more of business use. Purchased in "Whiskey," which is quite beautiful and gets a lot of looks/compliments.
I've been waiting months for these to return to drop. Several months for shipment. Absolutely freaking worth it. I ordered the mahogany. Classy old-school quality. Just beautiful. I have zero complaints (which is rare for me). My son's 17 months old, and I fully expect to give this to him in several decades. Thanks to LM Products for such a fantastic bag, and thanks to Drop for making it affordable. I'm in the process of moving so have it packed up, but will try to update with pictures when I'm moved.
I am thoroughly impressed with the finish and quality of the leather as well as the precision of the bag’s construction. At the Drop price-point the Calhoun is bargain given the build and materials. I love, love it!
Important quality update: see below
It's not often I come across a leather product like this. It's a gorgeous, heavy, classy piece of work. It's stiff and solid right now, but I can tell it'll be holding up really well over the years. I can't overstate how pleased I am with the quality and the construction. I keep glancing at it from across the room. It smells amazing. I keep thinking of excuses to go carry it around outside.
I really can't think of anything even minor to take away from it. It doesn't have the massive organization that some satchels do, but then that's a function of it's design. And there are ways around that. I don't really see myself adjusting the front buckles, but the overall design would suffer if they weren't there, I think. It's also reasonably heavy, but then it's not a modern material intended to be lightweight. It's stiff and rigid at the moment, but time will help with that.
I waited months for this drop to come up again after skipping out on the last one. I do not regret pulling the trigger on this, not one bit. If you like classic-looking accouterments, this is 100% the bag for you.
2.5 month update:
Most of what I said still holds, but there are a few things I'd like to add to my review:
The one thing that I really, really, wish I had known before getting this was the leather finish. I don't know a lot about leather, but the finish LM used for this is supple and smooth and soft.. which means it scratches very easily. After I started carrying the bag daily, it began to accumulate little scratches and dings and I couldn't figure out what they were. I eventually realized the marks were from my fingernails dragging across the leather. I tend to keep my nails pretty short (I pick at them otherwise), so it came as a shock that such a relatively light pressure was enough to mar the finish. It makes me wonder at the logic here -- you either have a soft, luxurious feel that scratches up quickly, or you go for a finish that is resistant to scratching and doesn't feel as nice. Frankly I'm a little irritated that the gorgeous finish pretty much only lasts until you actually start using the bag. If you plan on getting one of these satchels, reconcile yourself with the fact that it will gather marks like your spam folder gathers spam.
The next issue is significantly less important: the closure straps could probably use another hole or two. As it stands, it's sometimes a struggle to close the top flap. I find myself having to lie the bag down and press on it to get enough slack to clip it closed. The snaps are incredibly satisfying though.
The shoulder strap attachment points are well designed, but it does mean that for the reasons above, if the bag is hanging by it's strap and has any amount of stuff inside it, you can't really rotate the bag far enough while there is tension on the strap. Opening it is easy while hanging, but closing it pretty much always has to happen while the bag is lying on something.
I still love my bag and plan on keeping it at my side for many years, but these are a few things I wish I had known going in that would have set my expectations a lot better.
This bag is well made and fits what you need on the daily. It fit my needs perfectly and I know it will last for many years to come. Cons, it is a little tight if you were to use it as a school bag and had multiple books and It's also a little heavy if you needed to drag it across town.
