Wow. So this is the Calhoun in its final form :O
It looks like every small criticism I had of the (already great) first iteration has now been addressed. Really glad to see the shoulder D-rings moved to the back and the padded laptop pocket is a great idea. I’m really tempted by this, I might have to upgrade if I can figure out a way to sell the one I already have.
Questions for Tyler if you’re reading this: -I remember you said that you made changes to the Chestnut leather‘s coating for durability. My Chestnut leather has been suffering at areas of high wear — what exactly was changed and do you think those changes would have prevented the issues I’ve had? -For the laptop cushion, where exactly is it attaching (hard to see in the photos)? Is it to the sides of the bag’s interior, meaning is there velcro permanently attached to the inside of the bag? Any pictures of what the bag will look like without the cushion in it? Thanks!
DrFunkelsteinDoc Funk!
Thanks for the message. Glad we were able to tempt with yet another Calhoun! Let me see if I can answer some of the questions. Chestnut - essentially the difference between early runs of the Chestnut and later is that there is a bit more 'finish' on the leather. We don't go nuts with our tannage on finish because it can cheapen the look of it and doesn't allow for much patina. So we just inched up the amount of finish on our current Chestnut from where it was in early drops. As for areas of high wear - I think you'll see some signs of pataina/wear with any of our products for the reason that we don't use heavily coated leathers. They just don't feel nice or wear naturally if they have too much of a finish - in my opinion.
Laptop cushion - The divider attaches to the inside of the sides of the bag with velcro. Let me work on some photos of it without the divider. Essentially, there are velcro strips on the inside of the side panels that the edges of the divider attach to.

LMproductsThanks for the quick reply Tyler. I agree, I think leather with too much finish can look cheap. I’m not sure but I think the finish rubbing away is what has made parts of my bag look less like “patina” and a little more like grody damage (and only the areas of very high friction). I guess the question is whether the updated Chestnut is more resistant to the finish wearing away in those high-traffic spots.
DrFunkelsteinYou bet. I would say yes, the added finish since the original drop Chestnut will help that.

LMproductsAs always Tyler thank you for answering all these questions and for being so available. Were you able to get any more shots of the inside of the bag?
DrFunkelsteinHere's a good look without the divider in it. I should note, we will likely use a brown or neutral tone velcro for this production run - FYI. Let me know anything else I can help with on this drop for you.

LMproductsI'm glad that you iterated on the design; I bought the full leather one from previous drop, and after 2 months of heavy use I can already see problems in shoulder strap D-strings pulling the side panels towards the carrier. I'm almost tempted to try to sell mine and buy the updated version (but won't as after customs and tax the price is really steep). New small pockets on the inside make sense even though I really like the full leather feeling of the previous version. Keep on improving!
