Although not snake oil, I do question the value of what is essentially a commercial DS all-IC implementation. Also China tends to be bad at DAC implementations except for a couple of real audiophile companies. Is this substantially better than a iPhone 6S (3-DAC design) or one of the ESS9018 smartphones? Or the $400 Pono Player that is also balanced out with actual capacitors inside?

GUTBCan't you whinning boys do some research before making such stupid comment? Paw gold is one of the most respectful DAP in audiophile community and you tell me if this is better than a fucking iPhone 6s?

damnwhiningbitchThis kind of response is wholly unwarranted. He's very right to be sceptical of a product like this.

boabyI can't comment on this particular DAP, but I wrote a review of the Chord Mojo combined with the iPhone 6S as a data storage device, and if you don't mind carrying around two devices, you can get some really amazing sound from the combination even with CD-resolution files, and you can't make phone calls on a DAP. My reference headphones in the review were Moon Audio Silver Dragon V2 Ultrasone Edition 8s and I used a short Moon Audio Black Dragon USB cable between the Mojo and the iPhone along with the iPhone Camera Kit to give me USB connectivity. It works well with the Onkyo Music Player App, which gives you the ability to store and play high-resolution PCM files, so I got the 6s with 128GB of capacity, finally replacing my old IPod Classic just for CD rips alone.

boabywell, I used to be a skeptic till I switched to a really, really sensitive IEM. Heck, now even changing the damn cable alters the sound. So yes, there is a very large difference between this paw gold and the Iphone6s. The iphone 6S sounds really, really energetic but unrefined, or imagine an audio player that just throws all the notes at you without caring how it resolves. The PAW gold, outside a slightly higher noise floor, resolves each note really really well while remaining tonally balanced.

damnwhiningbitchThere was no whining, except from you...I guess you are doing your screen name justice... I am interested in high-end audio, which does not have to be high-price...Unfortunately, reviews of audio products are inherently very subjective, which is compounded by the fact that most have added bias due to the lack of proper controls, such as blinded sampling...It is valid to question any product, because lots of products pitched to the audiophile community reek of snake oil...I guess it is like doping and cycling...:-)

fascLots of audiophile products work great (the aformentioned Chord Mojo also being one), but somehow do not gain acceptance as other expensive electronics (TVs, PCs etc) do. But I agree it might not be for everyone, more importantly if your specific hearing faculties (due to age, conditioning, etc) don't appreciate any improvement over generic gear, why spend more? Very valid to try first and decide for yourself, the best way, imho.
Ultimately this is a subjective hobby :)

echinekoI feel really sorry for those who can't hear the difference between a well designed DAP, and their iphone. Its like having a nice field of flowers in front of tour eyes but all you can see is black and white... Or prehaps they are the lucky ones.....hearing things in a monochrome and hence never being haunted by stuff that sounds better.....
