I'd like to get this as an emergency light to keep in my car throughout the year. What battery would be good at dealing with Northeast heat and cold throughout the year?

The_EnquirerYou're welcome. I meant to reply the other day and forgot, sorry. So rechargeable is fine then, but when it's really cold you might expect some diminished output from any light, or get in the habit of taking the light indoors and back out with you when you drive. I don't have any experience using any type of battery in temps lower than around 15F but I think most all will still work and not give any no-power issues. It's smart to also get in the habit of draining and recharging the batteries at least a couple times a year but at the least it's prudent to pull them out and pop them on the charger anyway. Most lithium stores better (for cell life) in a half-charged state but it won't diminish cell life too terribly much if you keep them fully charged all the time and top them off periodically. I was thinking after the last comment that maybe one of the rotatable angle head lights with a magnetic tail might be a good option for you do consider. Massdrop has a Klarus one right now at a decent price. I don't have experience with that one but the similar models in various options from Rofis are very good and very well made, and there is a cheaper option that is also very worth considering from Nicron (I think the B-74 model, can't remember). If you need to change a tire in the dark or get under the hood, these can be stuck to body metal and are very handy, lots of light available plus low modes. They aren't throwers like this Lumintop on the drop but can carry a respectable distance even with the smaller head size, and they are certainly very visible to oncoming motorists if you point them that direction. I have a couple of the small AA/14500 angle lights from Rofis and Nicron and they're both great ($60 and $12 respectively and I actually like the cheaper one as much or maybe more), and one of them is always in my console box in the car.

Specs don't indicate if it's the neutral white or cool white one so I won't be joining.
Cool/blue lights disgust me.

It's a 26650 light, so, you'll have decent runtimes. Personally, I'd buy this and send it to Wayne at Skylumen.com and have the emitter changed to one of your liking. I too am NOT a fan of 6000k or similar color spectrum emitters and own more Neutral and high CRI lights myself. Just my .02$

DalamarThe quote Colinsdad shared is pretty accurate. Definitely cold white but there's no overt blue tint like the ultra cheap 6500K emitters/choices that you see in so many lights. Lumintop really likes that "classic" cold color but recently they have started to do some warmer Nichia in smaller lights and may be exploring Luminus emitters soon. The thing with a thrower like this is that you may actually want cool colors for the added distance (it's appreciable in this kind of flashlight where it isn't so much with normal beam patterns). There is a pre-order going on right now for the new Astrolux FT3 at banggood. I don't need it because I like this Lumintop well enough, but I ordered one anyway since it does have a neutral white option and the driver firmware is Narsil, which should be really nice. The price is killer for pre-order but it looks like once it is a normal production offering it will still be less expensive than the Lumintop and altogether the features and build look to be about the same between the two. Astrolux hasn't been the most dependable QC in the past but they are pretty well made. Biggest disadvantage is dealing with their distributor if you need to do so.

An in-hand photo would be appreciated. Still, not enough products here include photos of the item in-hand. Particularly items that are designed to be handled like flashlights, knives, pens, etc. Stats are one thing. But a single photo of the product being held is the best gauge of size and mass.

mazowNo, you can use any type. However, I got some of the Keeppower 5200 protected cells with the semi-button top and they are just a bit too long...anode cap got crushed in a tiny bit (still totally functional and no risk). Unprotected cells are a better fit but either works. Just be sure they can give 9-10 amps continuously if you'll be using turbo and/or in hot weather a lot.

I can't review this light since I didn't purchase it from massdrop but I've owned it since early summer. It's a strong tiny little monster thrower. Has some quirks and is not for the mod-inclined but I think it bests the GT Mini and I like it better than the Cat V6. I think the spill from this very tight beam is just a little wider and thus just a little more useful compared to the others while still reaching out with long arms. Certainly not a light for ordinary use - even at lower modes when used in distances of less than 100 meters or so I find the beam just too tight to the point of distraction and eye strain where a normal balanced or even a floody beam is better. Realistic usable throw is more like 350-400 meters in most situations. The ANSI throw is always theoretical and massdrop certainly added some millennial marketing by bumping the number up to 900. If you need to see farther then you'll need to step up to bigger lights. My only real gripe is the ridiculous lockout function and I think I'd prefer to have regular knurling patterns instead of the flat pineapple thing going on here, but it does look unique. The tube does get pretty warm, not just the head, but in high summer temps it has not been uncomfortable or a thermal problem. The discussion below about lumens fails to take into account out-the-front measurements which includes the driver circuitry and the combination of both the flat/dedomed HI emitter (as compared with the normal HD domes on the normal and .2 versions) with reflector design - using bare emitter data sheet specs is only a baseline for engineers to begin designing. These consistently pull about 7A so be sure you get a decent cell of 10A or better, protected or not, either way. You can get this light commonly for this same sixty dollar price, with a cell, if you order elsewhere, and have it delivered much faster...wish massdrop could negotiate some better deals somehow.

glennacYou're welcome. I had to go look up the definition of bloviations. Ha. :) I don't do pics or media on here but if you search this light on youtube there are several videos where you can get a better idea of both size and features. If you have any of the typical C8 style lights, this is the same length, just a fatter tube and head. Pretty compact still but not what you would consider a pocket light.

This is my first higher end light and I just joined the drop but concerned about the battery. I understand it doesn't come with a battery, but I'm having a hard time finding a reputable place to buy one of this size/power. Can anyone recommend a place to buy them and a good brand? Another thing I've found online is they normally come with the 18650 sleeve, does this drop contain it?

I have this light and really like it. It's my second most used light when camping - amazingly bright and long lived battery. I use my headlamp more for general hands free productivity but this light is great. It's a bit heavy and bulky in a pocket - those are my only complaints. I have no issues with the multi-switch.

Antiher0My most lamp when camping is a Coleman headlamp I got at Target. I also heavily use a Sparkr from Power Practical. Way lower lumens but still very bright and early to use with a USB recharge and a plasma lighter on the back.
