Improved Design & More Colors to Choose From

Made in collaboration with New York’s Manhattan Portage and available exclusively on Massdrop, these cases offer a lightweight, versatile solution for pen storage on the go. The durable Cordura nylon exterior has a water-resistant coating and is available in multiple colors voted on by the Massdrop community. Inside, you’ll find five pen slots with widths varying from 0.8 inch to 1.5 inches. Designed to accommodate pens of different thicknesses, these slots also help stagger pocket clips so they don’t bump against one another. Finally, the half-zip style has been improved based on member feedback and now features a longer flap that protects pen clips when they're tucked into the case.

Note: At checkout, choose the clamshell case in aqua, gray, navy, purple, red, or stealth black; or the half-zip V2 case in aqua or red. Due to the Cordura nylon dyeing process, colors may vary slightly from those pictured here.

About Manhattan Portage

More than 30 years ago, Manhattan Portage set out to make a bag that was “New York Tough”—a sturdy, expertly crafted carryall that people on the go could depend on. The result was the company’s original messenger bag, which combined the functionality of outdoor gear with streamlined city style. Today, the product line has expanded to include backpacks, laptop bags, and bike cases catering to students, working professionals, and travelers alike. All designs and materials are carefully selected to meet the high standard of quality Manhattan Portage has built its name on.

Thought I’d try to offer a sincere response to your questions. Here goes: Many enthusiasts of writing instruments can easily spend hundreds or thousands of dollars in pens and accessories. For them, these tools DO fall in the category of “fragile/specialized, requiring specific storage systems.” I use fountain pens almost exclusively when I can but my collection is rather mundane and cheap. Therefore, I do as you suggest and just stuff ‘em somewhere in my bag. I don’t own any specialized sleeves, cases, rolls for them. The one or two with which I might travel would be carefully protected if the occasion arose. To some extent, it’s a marketing thing - people want a bag that is designed for their pens (as opposed to repurposing something cheaper). For others, it’s an aesthetic choice. And for others still it’s a matter of wanting a practical, well-made container for their cherished pens. Believe it or not, there are many companies of varying size that make carrying vehicles for this market. I don’t own this product or anything from this company but I would imagine it’s a decent enough product for its intended purpose. Given the caveats of ordering from Massdrop, this appears to be a reasonable price for those who want this particular item. As of this writing and for the current sale, there were 7 cases remaining for sale. By all accounts, this was a very successful drop. I hope this helps with understanding the fervor some people feel about these cases and why, in many enthusiasts minds, a typical “back to school” case is unlikely to provide sufficient protection. Hope this helps. Cheers, Gonzo ps. I wrote this on my phone and did only a cursory check of its readability. I may edit for clarity in the future.
