Damn! I'm so tempted to buy it but not sure if it's legal to own such a long blade in Canada.

From a reputable company, with a good heat treat, 440C is a lovely knife steel. It also takes a wonderful polish, so it's a popular choice among custom knifemakers.
Note I said knives, not machetes. This is a questionable use for 440C. If Mantis Knives weren't a mystery brand, maybe I'd give them a shot. As it stands, get a Tramontina and save yourself the headache.

chathamharrisonMantis isn't a mystery brand. The issue is why they're known.
The company used to be run by Jared West, who tried to create a creepy cult-like group of supposedly die-hard fans of Mantis products, but after getting caught lying about the steels the company used on their knives, ran off to make a new company called Quartermaster and left Mantis to be run by his father.

Edit: (some ignorant comment about 440C being too brittle to be used for a machete)
I've done been taut betta now: http://www.jayfisher.com/440C_Love_Hate.htm

guvnorWhelp, I've read through a good bit of Jay Fisher's website now and I'm ready to confess to my sin of spreading FUD about 440C. To be fair I've only been exposed to what I now guess to be badly heat treated 440C.
It seems like the wives tales have won though, as there don't seem to be many quality production knives that I can find in 440C apart from dive knives and I really don't use a knife often enough to justify a custom job.

I can't find anything on this Machete anywhere. Anybody found a review somewhere? Maybe they are debuting it here and it hasn't been out elsewhere yet?
