Just getting into camping/backpacking and I want to do some weekend trips with my four year old daughter. Mostly late spring, summer and early fall. Will the 38l be large enough to bring everything I need or should I size up into the 58l?

lumberjakeJake If at all possible rental of equipment would be advisable at first. Or, borrowing from a friend. If you have lots of money you can start out buying the lightest, best stuff out there. It will fit in the small backpack. Otherwise, you are going to get to learn a great deal as you go along. There are tons of resources on the internet. In your case you are going to start out carrying more than you need and it will weigh more than it needs to. Getting the weight down comes with knowledge. Cool thing is, that as you are learning more, she will be growing older and stronger. You will be able to transfer more to her and your gear in total will be getting lighter. Longer trips getting more and more enjoyable.
I would suggest getting a small backpack for daughter. She will feel like she is 'helping'. Put lightest with highest volume stuff you can in there so it is full, but doesn't weigh anything. Stuffed animal goes in there. A little food. There is a whistle that is supposed to be very loud. I'd get her one of those. http://www.stormwhistles.com/
I remember going to Indian Princess camps with daughter and Cub camps with son. Absolute best thing is having them fall asleep next to you. Son is in Scouts now and can out hike me. He's 12. I still know more than him. That will change in his head in a few years. Don't kill yourself, or burn her out. Just go slow and short at first.
Stinking long answer to say larger pack will probably be best at first.

lumberjakeI would go with the 58L, it would be tough to pack everything for a weekend trip with adult and child into a 38L.

slacking if you're just starting out, even one night for you and daughter would be tough to fit in 38L. Fancier, more specialized (expensive) stuff would fit 38L.
