I picked up one each of the Massdrop brass pocket AAA flashlights.
LED Option: CREE XP-G2 R5 LED LED Option: Nichia 219 LED
The CREE version definitely has more output and I knew that going in to the purchase.
The Nichia version is pretty warm in color, more like old school incandescent bulbs. I like it when I'm cueing up another CD or LP while kicking back listening to my Massdrop AKG K7xx or the Sennheiser HD6xx headphones in a dark secluded room.
Back to the flashlights.... some folks claim their lights looked like they were cast and the fit and finish was poor. Also reported were issues with switches and LMH mode sequencing.
I put in a fresh copper top AAA batteries in each light and waited about 20 seconds. Pushed the rear button LMH, perfect. Leave the button in the on position, turn the front head assembly counterclockwise and back to clockwise to stop Low, do it again Med, once more High. Perfect functionality.
The fit and finish is excellent, I can't see any casting flash. They look look they were turned out of a solid piece of brass to me, then again I'm no metallurgist. The button click is solid and not mushy. For the money these lights are a great value.
The glow ring on the front seems to die out pretty quick, but no big deal for me.
FYI the clip is reversible and rather than stress it by prying it off just remove the tail cap and front head assembly and switch them around.
