I thought these sounded good... until I A/Bd them with my sennheiser HD580s. Then I compared them to my Grado SR-60s. Even though the SR-60s cost 1/3 the T-X0, the T-X0 are going to be my 'work' headphones because I'd care least if these were stolen/broken. Sound is very "canned" and muddy. Going between the Grados, Senns to these... It sounds like i put ear plugs in! Low end extension IS very good though. Midbass lacks the punchiness that I like. Soundstage is very poor.
To be TOTALLY brutal, I like my $20 random bluetooth canalphones more.
I'm powering them with a little tube amp.
I'd -guess- they were $45-65 headphones based on sound quality, if I didn't know better.

That's your problem right there. They need a good amount of clean, solid state power to sound remotely decent. The last thing you want to do is use these with a cheap tube amp. That's going to make these dark headphones sound even darker while starving them of power (volume doesn't mean that planars are getting enough power).

PolygonBronsonI just tried both my tubes and my little solid state. They still sound pretty bad, but I'll give it some more burn in.

PolygonBronsonPowering mine with Schiit Asgard 2 through Schiit MoBit, had to ear pad swap them asap and they have a dark (muddy?) signature. I do have experience with these headphones, I have a pair of T50RP II that I modded myself so I have a very good idea on the signature of these. (Wife like them so much she daily listens to these bad boys, thus the reason for me to get these).

iwluisTrue, they have a dark sound signature, no way around that. The frequency response graph shows that perfectly. However, there is a large difference between "dark" and "congested" or "muddy". These sound quite bad out of my e10k, very congested and muddy with poor bass control. Out of my Magni v1, however, the bass is well controlled with good instrument separation even though its still dark sounding. All I was saying is that the amp makes a good bit of difference with this headphone. I've also never had a satisfactory experience with any one of my four planars out of a tube amp. They just don't pair well, usually.

DekaeYou need a decent desktop amp to drive these - I recommend a Gilmore Dynalo - 1.5 watt of class A power will give you a completely different picture, clean, dynamic & punchy - average amps just aren't good enough to drive these properly.

DekaeI come from sr325e grados, and i also have a pair of SR60i's. My first rule of thumb when comparing any headphones is throw the grado's out. I dont think an open back grado is a fair competitor with a closed back planar. acoustically even the sr60 is a mind blowing headphone in stock form and crazy value when modded, but it has serious drawbacks. It is painfully uncomfortable after a short time, and their are acoustically fatiguing. They also have shrill highs and no bass. I love them but they are just drastically different then these closed back cans. I really lost you when you said you prefer your senn 580's. They are just a blatantly inferior headphone. neither of the cans you mentioned require an amp more then most PC motherboards are capable of handling, so it is the only reason i can think of why you are experiencing poor sound out of your fostex's.

" boring and soulless" I've owned them, I've also heard H800s and technically they're great but where's the music???
Agree - the Fostex are miles better in every way they convey the emotion of the music, they do the important things that matter well.. - I don't want to take them off when I'm listening to music.

murrsHonestly the fostex just sounds straight up muffled and Bland compared to the hd580s. Though now that the fostex are broken in for a few days they're starting to sound pretty decent on some tracks of music but they're still way too muddy and Bland on anything with a lot of acoustic instruments or clean vocals.
I have a magni 2 Uber coming today so we'll see if that cleans it up.
I mentioned in another thread the compressing the ear cuffs in the fostex makes them sound significantly better too I think the drivers are too far from the ears.

Dekaethe amp should help - Maximum Power, 50 ohms: 1.0W RMS per channel (probably the bare minimum to drive these properly) They can take 3.0W
