In the original product proposal to Fostex, yes...removable cables were requested.
Though It was in the original requirements, it didn't make it into the original version of the TH-X00 as Fostex is very methodical and careful.
They spent years working on their removable cable system to make it their version of perfect. They could have done it in a few weeks, but it wouldn't have been a true Fostex solution.
Removable cables for the TH-X00 line is one of those features that the community never stopped pushing for and we never stopped requesting.
This feature is so important to the community and to the headphones, that we renamed them: TR-X00 (The “R” is for removable.)
If you haven’t been following the journey of the first Mahogany version of the headphone into the Purpleheart and Ebony wood variants, we offer three different wood types for different aesthetics and slight sound signature variation.
However, since launch- the most requested (demanded!) change has been the ability to remove or swap cables.
Why? I’m so glad you asked!
If you develop any issues with the cables over time, you can replace them. If you need a specialized cable to connect to gear or wish to have a personalized cable, you have options.
(In the discussion comments which follow, please let us know if you modified your TH-X00 to accept removable cables and how you are using them now…Matt Takaichi is paying attention and sourcing cables for the community.  We’ve transferred the comments from the original headphone drop pages so that none of your contributions have been lost.)
Thank you for your support of this headphone, it has been a true success due to community feedback and participation. FYI, this latest change is the only one that we have planned for the series, we don’t have any other surprises on the horizon at the moment.  (I know somebody is going to ask me!)
For now, the time has come and the TR-X00 is available for ordering on June 1st!

CEE_TEEHere's a personal share...headphone adventures in 2014: I was attending a large headphone meet-up and Will Bright was mysteriously walking around with a brown paper bag... Inside?  A very early prototype Fostex TH-X00. He pulled them out and let me try them. Really nice-looking…no logos at the time, light blonde wood. But- boomy bass for my taste. (Same issue I had with the original Fostex TH-900.)   I gave some feedback and thanked him for letting me listen to them. They were “beautiful but not my preferred sound signature due to the amount and character of the bass”.
2015: Fast-foward to a mini-meet and someone had a brand new production pair of TH-X00 after they had just shipped the first batch. “Well, they are still really good-looking. I might as well listen for a quick check just to confirm I don’t need them…wait, what?!!?” “These sound like totally different headphones!” "Massdrop was able to tweak these THAT much??”
This was the second Massdrop Collaboration product that I heard. (AKG K7XX was the first.) Great improvements with both of these headphones and I see a pattern. I understood what Will Bright was up to and became a fan of the Massdrop Collaborations program. Now I am a part of things, of course... :)

CEE_TEEYep, mine are modified by Peterek with 2.5mm connectors, 3.5mm jack and 1.2m cable length. Great work! And also Lawton dampening material covering the driver housing inside the cups to reduse bad resonances.

LeopandaI also had mine modded by Peterek with the 2.5mm connectors, 3.5mm jack and 1.8m Cable length. Excellent professional job. My ebonies look as if they were originally manufactured that way.

CEE_TEEFor people who have bought the originals would you consider selling a mod kit to add the removable cable?
So have the parts and cable kit?

CEE_TEEAny chance you share with us where are they manufactured? I wonder if those are made in Japan or China...

CEE_TEE Is that the same connector that Sennheiser uses for the HD580/600/650/6xx?
Also, can you add the frequency response graph back to the listings that compares the three Fostex offerings?

badheinz1985Made in China, not a secret...the red TH-900/TH-910 cups have to be made in Japan because of the Urushi lacquering process and artisans.

umrjmacNot the same connector exactly, please see here: https://bit.ly/2Hc2t41
rslataraYes this is the FIRST THING that came to mind when this was announced. I recently bought a pair and would PREFER the Fostex connectors due to the lack of room to fit most connectors without grinding away a portion of the baffle.
Until the connectors are made available I will press the folks at Massdrop until we get what we want. I have the Mahogonies but even if I get a pair of the Ebonies I'll still want my Mahogonies to have removable cables.

CEE_TEEAny idea if Fostex would be able to modify existing TH-X00s for the removable cable on the the new TR-X00? I know there are third party options available, but I would love to send mine to Fostex (for a reasonable fee) to do that kind of work if possible.

CEE_TEECustom cables for Fostex TR-X00 (Finally) Hello everyone. This is for the people who have purchased the Fostex TR-X00 headphones. As you know, they come with that very heavy and long (10ft) cable. To this date, there has never really been anyone making aftermarket cables for them. I just facilitated a process between periaptcables.com and a company in China. periaptcables.com does custom cables and this China company will be providing them with the connectors that are compatible with our headphones. And the best part, they fit. lol. Most people were using the Sennheiser cables but they are not a great fit and look. Once periaptcables.com gets the connectors, they will display them on their website. They said it can take up to 3 or 4 weeks. So keep an eye out for them soon.

Assimilator702Good point! If the jacks are made available to TH X00 owners for them to DIY, I would love to get them. I am still happy with my mmcx mod. But if the parts are coming from Fostex-Massdrop then very happy to give it a try.

D-RomVery cool, to see this company taking notice. They had told me many moons ago they were working on it. The connectors might raise the price but the cables are well priced as is so I wouldn't mind that.

CEE_TEECan you work with Fostex to make the DIY removable cables jack available for the TH-X00 owners? It would be awesome to mod the TH-X00 to be TR-X00.

CEE_TEEDrop MIA, with 18 days on the clock, and still being produced. Hmm. By the numbers, I calculate that fostex agreed to make 30. That information would have been better to have. A little sunshine please.
