Just got my Ebony. Few things I've found out so far...
• There's a bit of excessive highs (treble/siblings) on Ebony for my liking when paired with Jotunheim. Although I've never tried it, I think I'd prefer it with a warmer SS amps with it instead.
• Changing from Fostex TR-X00's 1/4" cable to Sennheiser's CH650S 4-pin XLR on Jot seemed to have reduced the highs while improving instrument separation. But the cable switch wasn't enough and I still get listening fatigue from it rather quickly.
• CH650S fits in Ebony but not all the way in, so it can easily fall out if I accidentally pull it. But music seems to come through fine.
• When I tried Ebony on DV336SE, Ebony's bass sounded muffled/bloated and took away of its strengths. In my experience, the HD600 I also own paired much better with it (even better than my HD650).
• I also own HD600 & 650. And TR-X00 Ebony is definitely the superior headphone for EDM. It produces better defined bass, trebles and finer details. I just need the highs (siblings/treble) reduced because it quickly gets fatiguing.
• I've also compared both HD800 and Fostex TR-X00 Ebony with various music genres. And I felt that Fostex was vastly superior at playing EDM and electronic Pop & Hip-pop despite its smaller sound stage. Ebony also played regular Hip-Pop and Pop very well thanks to the bass but so did the HD800 with its wide sound stage and good vocals. So it's just a matter of personal taste. The only genre that Ebony consistently couldn't beat the HD800 was at Rock songs due to the recessed mids/vocals. Everything else, it was on par or better. It's often said that Fostex headphone and HD800 or 800S are good combo to have to cover all music genres.
• Thus far, I've found Smartphones, Audioengine D3 and iPod shuffle the best at taming the highs while still retaining decent SQ. (but bass was still punchier on Jot) • Cable paring wise, I've eventually went back to using the stock cable as I got used to the bright sound. Although the sennheiser cables sounded more darker which helped to reduce the listening fatigue, it made the music sound 'off' due to differences in polarity. I didn't mind the 'off' sound at first but it bothered me more and more over time, thus going back to the stock cable.
I'm still going to try and look for balanced cable intended to be used for TR-X00 to see if it can sound better than my current cable pairing such as this one: https://www.massdrop.com/buy/cardas-premium-clear-light-headphone-cables. Either that or look for a SS amp with darker tone than Jot.
Note: I removed the dryness/coldness part which became less of an issue as the highs got tamed. So I think I just can't handle the highs on Jot and mistaken coldness with it.

HeinsbeansInteresting, I was actually considering the Jot, thanks for mentioning that. How would you define "dryness / coldness"? I'm familiar with the terms bright and warm, although I've never experienced them.

HeinsbeansHi The L/R markers are supposed to be facing out, the connectors are different. Both the large and small poles are on the opposite sides but also polarity is reversed. It won't sound like it should if the polarity get's reversed. So the Sennheisers are different, you can get connectors from Ali-express if you want to make a custom cable. You can push some of them in and they will stay in place with the poles going into the wrong hole and it'll work just not ideal, I would rather not potentially damage the connector myself.

BmxantI actually find the Jotunheim to work well with the Fostexs. I can see why people could call it cold, but the Jot has so much power that the bass which seems to be the defining characteristic of these cans goes on for days. The lows never stop. I have several Fiio amps, several Schiit setups, and even tried it on my home receivers. The "coldness" is there in all of them. Although I didn't try it on my Darkvoice due to the low impedance ratio.
I really do like my Jotunheim (using an external multibit). It's not cold, it's just a really powerful amp that's flat. So the "V" sound signature of the headphones means the highers are just that, loud. So I can see why it would seem cold.

rslataraThat's why I have to plug them in backwards in order to fit them in, because the large/small poles are on the opposite sides. Good thing with the Fostex connector on the headphone is that the connector holes are different sizes, so you can't accidentally put it the wrong way and damage the springs.
Regarding reversed polarity, that seems to be the case as well between fostex & senn's cables. I've tried the invert polarity mode in Audirvana plus but it made the songs less dynamic/punchy. So I think he XLR might be mitigating the SQ degrade from reversed polarity. But perhaps my Ebony could sound even better if I use a XLR cable designed to be used with TR-X00.

HeinsbeansAfter listening to Ebony on my Nexus 5x with Neutron Music Player, it sounded better than Audioengine D3. There's still the highs (sibilant/treble) but it's a lot more tamed now and most of the EDM I own have became listenable except for very few such as Aiwa by RIOT.
In my opinion, Jot + balanced cable still produced the highest quality bass but Nexus 5x has the most controlled/tamed highs and it sounds better than Audioengine D3 (at least through OS X), so I might stick to my Nexus 5x for now as it's a good middle ground.
I haven't done thorough EQ testing but last time I tried to reduce the highs briefly on Audirvana Plus + Tokyo Dawn Labs: TDR Nova GE, it barely responded to EQ at all (unlike the HD650s which responds much better). So maybe the only thing I need is a good dac to get the best sound of my Ebony.
Not sure how good the dac on Nexus 5x is though, maybe I could do better. I also tried listening through RCA female to 3.5mm headphone jack adapter in order to listen to just Schiit Eitr > Mimby chain but that also didn't sound good at all. The highs weren't tamed: https://photos.google.com/photo/AF1QipPEr-6-d_6x288VOU2oubQAfUKiY3fgXiVe5Aey
Also tried listening through Mac mini's 3.5-mm headphone jack and that sounded the worst since I could hear hissing sound.
Lastly, I've tried listening through iPod shuffle 5th generation and the highs were probably the most tamed/controlled of all devices I've tried. But it came a little short in bass quality compared to smartphones.
Next up, I'm going to try listening to Audioengine D3 + JRiver WASAPI on Windows to see if it can sound better than my Nexus 5x. I'm also going to try listening through my Nexus 5x again but with Audioengine D3 attached in using AudioQuest DragonTail USB Adaptor For Android Devices USB A (Female) To Micro USB.
