I modified the cables on my pair of ebony Th-x00. Although I love the headphones, the mod cost over $150 since I don’t have an electrical background (someone else did It) . honestly I’ve been a bit jaded about this because 1) it increased the spacing of the wood so now the sound leak is much worse (and the bass & aesthetics are a bit off), and 2) The combined price of the TH-X00 EB, the mod, accessories, and a carrying case would have been enough to buy one of the main-line Fostex products (even if it had to be used).
I would have been less jaded if I had truly understood the implication of that super-long, non removable cable that came with my un-modified pair. It was a pain and constantly became tangled (not in knots but like clockwise twist on cables). Additionally - the converter to be able to use AUX made the headphones a hassle and a drag (literally, even with the most light-weight converter, it consistently was an annoyance due to weight and came unplugged).
that all being said I actually own 2 pairs, one with the ultra dark ebony, and one with a slightly browner Ebony (the modified pair) lol. I guess I’m just a supporter - but one that wishes he had the ability to purchase the TR-X00 [FOMO].

Sebi321Was your detachable cable mod from peterek? I've been considering the mod but a modified sound signature would be a deal breaker for me.

Soldering is not that difficult and you should try someday.
I used MMCX connector which does not require drilling or making space. Totally reversible.
And no change to sound at all!!

ridhuankimNice, though only a madman would reverse those headphones back to that heavy, ugly 10 foot cable!

UzuzuThat was just in case of warranty issue. But I guess my unit wont have problem.
After the mod it was like... it was supposed to be.

Sebi321You gave consent to the mod... You shouldn't be jaded... You could have also watched reviews on it before you bought it.

Nickslife89It shouldn't have added spacing unless they used something bigger than a 2.5mm connector... regardless he could have done the mod himself easily for less than 2 dollars which is a darn shame. 150 is a complete ripoff, I hope that includes shipping but honestly the guys doing the mod, at least nearly all of them are found on head-fi and straight ripping people off. I mean depending on whether or not you need to make space it's a 5 minute, to 20 minute job at max. 40 bucks would be reasonable with good connectors IMO but they all want to make money.
After making some custom cables myself though, the price really depends on how much sleeving was put into making the cable, which equals effort expended. I've seen people sell cables with raw mogami to a y split with the 2 ends covered in paracord (total 10 minutes to make) for 60 dollars. 60 dollars would be fair if the lower portion of the cable was split and braided because that actually takes time.
That being said I want to make a few custom cables for people at affordable pricing because I enjoy it and I just listen to music while doing so. Anyone interested can hit me up, lol....

UzuzuSir, you deserve many thumbs up but I can only give one at a time. It is that spirit that you demonstrated which attracted people to gather in places like head-fi and massdrop. Hope that continues, inspire and influence more people to envision the same.
By the way.... I am eyeing on 1more triple driver overear headphones.... when am I going to stop!!!.???!!!

UzuzuI don't see a $150 increase or did I misunderstood your comment? The price increased by $5 and you seriously can't complain about that. I bough mine for $414,99 and that was in August last year.

VenoXj1We aren't talking about the 15 dollar increase massdrop added for the disconnectable cables.... and yes it increased by 15 dollars. We're talking about people on head-fi who charge 150 dollars to modify an attached cable headphone to a detachable cable headphone.... which is pure, unbridled avarice and voracity. We were saying a price of 50 dollars is a lot more honest most of the time, depending on what connectors/materials are used. Regardless it's almost always an extremely simple, easy, and cheap job to do. I do it myself, everyone should and save themselves the money.

UzuzuOh, okay. Sorry totally misunderstood you guys in that regard. My bad. Yeah $150 of an increase for just a removeable cable is nuts. At least Massdrop did it right and just increased it by $15. Well, I thought about doing it to my TH-X00 but I'm just too scared to damage it and that is why some other people have the money and don't really care about money will pay that price because they simply can't do it themselves. However, I would never pay $150 for a damn removeable cable even though the big heavy cable on my cans do annoy me.

VenoXj1Practice soldering test cables, etc. Then practice on a cheap pair of headphones. Then do your X00s. It's super easy.

UzuzuYeah sure, I get that but I still don't really trust myself. Where are those connectors going to which apply the 3,5mm jack for example? I can't just have them dangeling below the cans. They should've been in there so that is another issue for me. I just take my cans how they are even though I very like the idea of removeable cables since my T50RP Mk3's have that feature.

VenoXj1have them fit into the chassis of the headphones, where the current cable comes out. I'd use 2.5mm because they will fit easier, and the chassis of the x00 is already quite thin. Any drilling if any should be minimal. First take your pads off then use a micro-screwdriver set to take out the 4 screws holding the cup to chassis. Inspect the internals and judge what connectors you want to use. Then cut that wire and sauter it in boy, it is E Z P Z. Like I said, practice beforehand, because connectors like 2.5mm can be a little tricky if you are brand new but once learned it is a skill that pays off. If you are unknowing of what cable lines serve as ground/signal, then before you cut the cable you can test which wire leads to which end, giving you a 100 percent fullproof positive identification of which wire carries the ground and which carries signal, even if you have absolutely no idea what you are looking at. Again, Eezy Peezy brother. Godspeed and goodluck on your modding ventures, lad!

UzuzuI really appreciate your reply but I pass. It's not that the cable is bothering me as hell but for me it's too much of a risk. 2.5mm is actually nothing I personally want so having to drill the case is nothing I wand and ever will do to my cans. I'd better buy a new pair for that purpose lol. How to waste money, I know. But I'm a collector anyway soooooo not much of a problem.
