I'm thinking about pulling the trigger on these. I do like bass and a big fan of hip-hop. Maybe tonight, but if you guys' know any other alternative, please share. I hear these are the best cans under $500 for Hip-Hop and EDMD/Dance. Update 12/16/18: Bought them and love them!

MegazineI think these sound really fun and amazing for EDM/Dance the only drawback I'd say is that they lack a bit in sound stage but everything else is amazing. They are bassy but also manage to remain very clean and detailed at the same time.

HydeI ended up buying them and they became my favorite cans for hip-hop and EDM. The bass is so tight and deep. I have over half a dozen cans, and they are in my top two. They have a unique sound to them, I can't explain it. Although people claim the bass is exaggerated, I love them for it.

HydeAs for the headphones themselves, and not specifically for specific genres, I'm liking the LCD-2C. Although it was previously the 4XX, I feel the LCD-2C does everything slightly better, but I need more time. The 4XX are a great value and build quality is very high. I think my third favorite can right now is the 58X - for the price and easy to drive, their unmatched. I'm currently using my 7XX for gaming, although they aren't as intimate like the 6XX of 58X, they have great soundstage for open world games. 58X/6XX are great for intimate games like, God of War, linear RPG's and Persona 5. Personally I don't think I can recommend the LCD-2C at their retail price at $800. The 4XX for $180 do an incredible job. If you can score the LCD-2C for less than $600, their worth every penny.

Megazinelol damn, you have a nice collection over there. Though I thought generally people get LCD-2C as the upgrade over TH-X00 but maybe the TH-X00 do have a more pronounced bass and treble so for certain genre might be more "fun" sounding, but I'd imagine LCD-2C would have better resolution and soundstage overall isn't it? Oh by the way, since you have the Mahogany now, assuming that's the "bar". How close would you rate the vocal distance between all your headphones. I normally only get closed headphones so I'm thinking to try open headphone one day, but one thing that bugs me a lot is when vocal sound too distant. Mahogany is front and centre which is good, but is there any headphone in your collection that you'd not recommend for me since vocal sound "far" or any other one that does up front and intimate vocal well? Also I'm also thinking to try planar (I have O2/SDAC so it should be ok) would you recommend yes or no against it? Thanks!

HydeI personally don't think the LCD-2C are an upgrade over the TR-X00 (Mahogany). They are different in many areas. Although they both offer very deep, tight, low bass, that's pretty much where the comparisons stop -- TR-X00 still offers deeper and tighter bass with slightly more impact. The TR-X00 are closed cans, more intimate, better treble, less soundstage, brighter, better detail, and are far lighter. Although the LCD-2C are still very good for EDM and Hip-Hop, I still believe the TR-X00 plays them better. Where the LCD-2C shine, is in rock, Jazz, classical, due to their wider soundstage. Let's look at classical music as an example for soundstage: the instruments sound further apart, which makes the allusions that the orchestra is nearly surrounding you with music. It's hard to get that sound from closed cans. When you go wider, you lose detail; cans that do them both very well, cost far more $$. Vocal distance from closer to further away: 6XX, 58X, TR-X00, 7XX, LCD-2C, 4XX. It really comes down to the music you listen to, so it's hard to say which one to recommend to you. What are your favorite genres, and what other categories do you listen to?

MegazineAhhhhh I see, hmmm I normally listen to a lot of female vocal rock, acoustic performance, and pop in general. Things I like about TH-X00 is that the vocal, guitar, violin and piano just sounds rich, and in rock songs the snare drum has its energy and the bass drum also hits hard. One of the songs I've been listening lately: bülow - Two Punks In Love https://youtu.be/Hqd5BbVTEz0 To be honest tonally I really like TH-X00 I just wish its sound stage is better. For reference I find similar to Grado headphones which also sounds really good for rock. I'm currently end up going back to my Denon D2000 since its soundstage is better and tonally close to TH-X00 Mahogany, except resolution not as good. But I'm always open to try other types of headphones haha (that's part of the fun I guess). Though according to your description should I try either the 6XX or 58X? Which has more treble? (I find more treble makes string instruments sound more "fun")

HydeNote* Also look at what others say, since I don't have years of experience -- getting there. I just listened to your song. It's definitely vocal focused, and the violins play a really big role, followed with the guitar plucking away as the third main focus. Now what the LCD-2C did with the track, was that the vocal was front and center, violins played on the left and right, and the guitar seemed to use imagery, playing slightly in the center, but at a distance from the vocals. This sound is tricky for me since, I don't typically listen to this music. Great sounding headphones for this genre would be the 6XX and 58X, since they are vocal focused but open. They give this exclusive sound signature through their unique veil. The problem is that you won't be straying too far from the TH/TR-X00 by doing so. The 6XX and 58X are narrow like the mahoganies. They also play highs very well, with great detail, but are slightly less bright. What I recommend is that you look into a can that could compliment your TH-X00. Since you typically listen to vocal focused music, and rock, Your mahoganies plays those genres extremely well; their deep bass are excellent for rock. Maybe something with large soundstage, and planar magnetic technology will do the job for you. They can sound darker, offer wider soundstage, be laid back and offer a unique deep bass sound signature. All I can say is that right now, your Mahoganies are excellent for you, and you may not need/want a complimentary headphone, unless just for fun. I think what might be worth it for you, since you mostly listen to those genres, is for you to jump into mid to high-end headphones ($1100-$1900) which will improve in the sounds you already love. 6XX has more treble but not by much. The 58X offers more bass.

MegazineLOL damn it I kind of suspect as much. I think any other headphone in the similar price range would just be pros and cons at different things. I was eyeing the ZMF Eikon or Atticus before but recently found out Hifiman HE560 might be a cheaper alternative. I guess now is a good time to research more into headphone in that price range. :P

HydeYea it’s really tricky. I’m looking forward to the HIFIMAN Edition XX. Speculation says that we might be getting a $1100-$1300 quality of sound, but for $599. Some say this will not be the case when the time comes. The Massdrop Focal Elex pulled it off, so I have my fingers crossed. Which reminds me! You might love the Massdrop Focal Elex — focuses on vocal and offers high quality detail, and they are open cans. They are $699 and are a replicas of the Focal Elear which cost around $1100. Another commentator says, they are the next level to the HD-650, and the TH-X00. You could go a cheaper route with the 4XX at $169. This will give you an idea of what planar megnatic and large soundstage sounds like.
